I have several rods for sale and have just taken one to the Post Office to get a price on postage, The rod is in a hard cardboard tube and belive it or not it weighs 1.8kg (approx 4lb) and is 1.8mtr (6ft) long, and the quotes are Special Delivery = £8.65 or 1st Class Recorded = £7.30. I wondered if anyone knows of any cheaper alternative which will not include any major hassle, such as travelling half way across town to some courier collection depot.

Fastway Couriers normally collect it. Dont know if they would be any cheaper than that though.

If you have been quoted those prices then send it with them!!!

Most couriers start around £12.00 for that size.

My post office wont take anything over 1.5mtrs unless sent via royal mail parcel force which works out double your quote if not more….

Under 1.5mtr is sent for around £5.00 this is via “standard parcel” it is insured (and you can up the insurance value £1.00 for every £100) but it takes between 3 – 5 days to arrive!

              good luck!

A had a pole go missing through fastway, they said they’d deliverd it and they never and the driver was never seen again so i would never use them.

The post office price is quite cheap to be honest you’ll be hard pushed to beat that.

Pay the £8.65 and you are then insured for up to £500

                    Thanks for all your replies.

Thing is just say for instance one of the rods is worth about £50 but the postage is £8 then bidders will take this into consideration and only bid say £42,then after you take away the cost of the listing approx £1 and the auction site takes 10% of the final value , thats another £4.20, then paypal will have their cut (3.4% + 20p) approx £1.50 = a total deduction of £6.70 take that away from the £42 and your left with £35.30 for a rod thats worth £50. And you have still got to get a hard tube to post it in and get yourself to the post office. Just doesnt seem worth it some how!

Make them pay the postage on it and don’t let them have it for less that £50. If it’s ebay just have a buy it now price on it.

i have sold many rods on fleabay and online.
I am surprised royal mail would send it as the limit is 1.5mts before going to parcel force. Like wheely says however you send it make sure you have it insured as couriers can damage rods, simply due to the fact 99% of couriers use 6ft cages to transport goods to the main hums / depots – all they need to do is leave an overhand and bang hey presto 1 broken rod – to give you an idea at one stage i was having 1 rod in 4 broken – you must get them insured for all damage not just loss.
When you pack it pack it with good bubble wrap aswell but dont pack it so the rod has no movement, if you do pack it solid again you run the risk of a knock popping the eye rings. My advice is what i think you have worked out, charge the punters on fleabay for postage seperate, pack it well in a good tube, post it with a service where you get insured, cross your fingers!!!

f1, as many others on here have said, i’m suprised you can send it with royal mail/parcel force as they have always refused to send any of my rods due to length issues!the currier i have to send with locally is £20!
