TF_KarponiNot sure if this topic has been done before, but I have got to saturation point with fishing mags mainly match fishing and pole fishing mags and was wondering if Dave Harrell and Jon Arthur and the likes have considered offering electronic copies of their magazines?
I don’t particularly want to throw mags out, but if I had electronic copies this would save lots of space and searching topics would be alot easier.
Does anyone else think this would be a good idea in this day and age of computers and is there any reason why they could not provide this service at a cost.
I realise there would be problems with copying, but there must be some technology available now to prevent this from happening?
I look forward to hearing your view on this.

TF_Waveney OneThe topic has been done before yes but still interesting. I still have a full set of Creel mags from the 1960’s!!! Brilliant, even Waterlog cannot touch it for quality imo.
Talksport do a very good on line mag for free viewing. The radio station obviously pay for it but it has usual mag stuff but also ‘live’ interviews, videos etc plus of course the great Sport Quiz. It doesn’t seem to have many if any adverts though so how does it pay for itself?
I would like to see it and I believe it will be a growth area. All the newspapers have an online version and the Ipad could have access.

TF_geepsterParticipantI suggested that (the video mag) when I first joined OnlineFishing Waveney, two years ago. Just not got the resources.

TF_NW Cut AnglerI can see some merits in the ideas. Personally I prefer a tactile object like a newspaper / magazine to read etc and the ability to read / take anywhere. Like many I kept all my magazines but it started to get silly and the earache mounted. Now if I want to keep an article etc I remove it and store it in a file whilst recycling the remainder in our paper rubbish collection.

But surely its the future of magazines and media in general, so surely the resources have to be found or things will go from bad to worse?
I don’t know how bad it is in the fishing mag industry, but from what I read (Online, funnily enough) the magazine industry is in trouble as a whole…
A good example people wanting less paper I suppose would be the e-book industry. Amazon are now selling MORE e-books than paperbacks… link to story
Who wants paper nowadays?an iPad or iPhone App wouldn’t be that difficult for an website like Online-fishing with the right know how of course…
And the DHP mags in an single app where people can buy an single issue or a whole subscription probably wouldn’t cost that much to make either…

TF_Steve LockettI’ve just started one myself and have followed Will’s (by association) from the start.
It is pretty easy to lock the document and allow restricted access, but there will always be someone who is working on breaking that sort of thing. The other plus point is that every issue can always be on sale, they do not have to have a shelf life. My first mag is a summer edition and potential readers will be able to buy it next summer if they feel the articles still have merit.
The encryption I am using allows any amount, or limited days of viewing from a single computer, and the viewer can print the mag out if they prefer to read hard copy.

TF_Serious SamPretty hard to read an online mag on the bog or in the bath, there will always be paper magazines.
Very hard to make money from online magazines as people have always had, and expect to have, anything they read on the ‘net for free, it’s ingrained and people begrudge paying for information on the ‘net – even the major newspapers are failing to make money from online services :-/

DaveHarrellParticipantYou will be able to access our old issues online very soon. Watch this space…

TF_Waveney OneGeeps that was pretty forward thinking 2 years ago. Must be worth having another try after 2 years.
As Lee said, all paper mags are struggling to keep up circulation as far as I can see. Paper takes up a huge space and our recycling bin has more paper in it than anything else.
Good for you Dave.

TF_KarponiI agree with the fact a magazine is far easier to read than online and I would still buy the magazine, but it would be nice to have electronic copies of the older issues, then I can chuck the old paper mags, saving space and will be able to search for topics. At the moment I have many a time thought hay there was an article on that in such and such a mag, but can I remember which one – no chance. You must have done this yourself?
Interesting Dave you say they will be available to access online, does that mean they will be available to purchase or just look at online?

Agree totally, great read.

Not with a downloadable PDF like mine and Brian’s written in landscape format as our default standard. You can size it as you wish and scroll or click through page by page, viewing a double page spread on your full screen, or zooming in to see detail in pictures.

Yep, that is a downside

TF_KarponiSorry to raise this again, but its has been 5 months now since I raised this about electronic back issues. Has any progress been made towards offering this service?
I note you now offer a binder for the match fishing magazine in your subscription options. Are these available to buy on their own?
This would be a start in organising my mags that I have back to the yesr 2000! -

(Yes I’ve got them from ’76 up until about 2000)
Progress is just another abstract noun.

TF_baitchefParticipantpersonally I’m not sure if electronics mags will take off just yet, not until the tablets become commonplace. We are a bit of a techie family even though we tend to be a bit slow acquiring. Anyway, I bought my daughter an Ipad for xmas. I have to say although they are a bit gay, the potential is vast, simply because they are so mobile, I’ve sat on the bog with it (as you do) and Leah watches TV in the bath!!!
Providing the content is good and rich, with things like live features etc I think there is definitely a future in it. -

TF_paulDIs anybody else getting a bit bored with the magazines ? I think they promote companies, products and anglers far to much now. Too many pictures and not enough to read. Ive got some old copies of MF which are much better and I bet Wavenys “Creel” mags are a fer better read. 15 mins standing in Smiths and you can read most of them.
There also getting bloody expensive. Not much change from a tenner for a couple of mags and a bar of chocolate.
I cant see there being any future in printed media and it will go the same way as records & CD’s have.
In 5 years time youll be able to get to your peg and use a Iphone app to find out how to fish it. -

TF_Lee WoodAngling mags Apps on the iPad might not be the most popular at the moment, and if not done in house could be more expensive than what they bring in, however digital versions of the magazine could be done very cheaply by creating a login area on the respective websites for subscribers. This would be able to help them see if there is enough demand for an Match Fishing App or an DHP app.
Assuming DHP, Emap etc use Adobe Indesign, it could be the simple case of exporting the finished mag to a high quality PDF and placing these in an subscribers area.
Magazine subscribers should of course have access to this at no extra charge, but there should also be an option for those that only want the digital version.Pricing is everything, and imo it should be at LEAST 20% cheaper than the print version.
iPad/tablet/smartphone users could then download this to their device or computer and in the case of Apple users place it in the iBook reader app which is a free App from Apple which can read PDF files…

IMO ‘endorsing’ and ‘only carp puddles’ are far too often soundbite rhetoric.
