Dont fish too heavy for them there more finiky than F1s ! 3lb reel line 2lb hooklength 16 hook.

Try paste down the edge and at 4m.

Seriously, light line, but not too light, they scrap big time. Light floats they’ll drop the bait at the first hint of resistance. And bread for your life. I’ve fed mashed bread for them in harbours in the past – not sure if it will work in the sea.

Make a team of 10 size 14 hooks with 0.20 line. 1 inch links to the main line of the rig. Hooks 1,1/2 inches apart. Wrap it around a full slice of moist white bread squeezed into a ball and push the hooks into the bread. You need to cut off the crusts. Fish it with the bomb. Just wait for the rod to pull around. Not match rules but it is sea fishing and this rig is deadly for mullet!

Best advice i can give is,if you have any hair,cut it short to save pulling it out.
Seriously they are murder.Tried for 2 years to hook 1 down there and they dont seem interested as an alternative have a go for the wrasse with a float,great fun.

Sorry True Blue,writing my post as you were posting! Not contradicting,just as a lad from sunny doncaster have found mullet a real challenge.Anyway still think wrasse are more fun(well at least i can catch them)

the only time i ever caught mullet was using a bubble float two foot from the hook wich was around a 1/0 with a big bunch of mudrag on. dip the bunch of rag in the edge before casting which gives them a bit of “strength in numbers” cast past the mullet and slowly retreive it back past them. seen a guy doing this once and thought that looks alright so had a go myself and had a few

As DAT said,trying to catch mullet will drive you insane, but what fighters when you hook one. I don’t know Swanage, but if there are any fishing boats in the area that clean their gear nearby or a quay where they land fish, try a bit of mackerel flesh for bait. A mate of mine fishes with a cage feeder full of liquidised bread and bread flake on the hook, he has quite a bit of success.

Had one of my best ever fishing sessions catching mullet in Dartmouth harbour (Not a beach I know and apparently harbour mullet are easier to catch).

Fished a 2 swan waggler at four feet. 4lb Maxima straight through to a size 12 hook at about four feet. The tide was coming in so it was just like fishing a big wag on the river.

I stood on some harbour steps and trotted bread flake through, feeding balls of mashed bread (tin of mashed pilchards stirred in for flavour).

I started fishing at 6.30 and by 9am I’d had 9 mullet to 4lbs and a bass (!) of about three pounds.

Got home just as the rest of the family were waking up and announced that I’d caught our supper (was with the in laws so there was 14 of us).

Mind you, I’ve tried this several times since in other places and never done so well.
