TF_Dave Pelletnot been in for many years
used to go in at dinner when I worked in Sheff, okay to handle & compare rods & poles but I’d have never bought one from themway overpriced
recall the last time I went in they didn’t have any top flight rods or poles at all, apparently they made the business decision to not carry stocks of expensive items, I can understand that, but I wonder how many people went in to view the top range kit & ended up either buying from them, or buying other items of tackle
think they managed to stay afloat for so long as they were an insurance payout tackle dealer

Bennetts of Sheffield Ltd Ceases Trading
One of the country’s largest fishing mail order companies is the latest business to fall foul of the economic downturn.
Bennetts of Sheffield Ltd, based just off the Wicker Arches in Sheffield, has ceased trading after more than half a century supplying fishing products to anglers across the UK.
Business turnaround and insolvency specialists Wilson Field Ltd are the proposed liquidators and a creditors meeting has been scheduled for November 2-4.
The company has a strong internet and mail order business and it is hoped that a buyer for the goodwill and assets of the company will be found.
Emma Bower of Wilson Field Ltd, said: “The business has operated in Sheffield for more than 50 years but in common with many other businesses it has been hit by the economic downturn and this has, unfortunately, resulted in staff redundancies.
“The company has a strong internet and mail order business and we are hopeful that a buyer for the goodwill and assets of the company will be found.”
Parties interested in purchasing should contact Emma Bower at Wilson Field on 0114 235 6780.
…………
Bennetts were pretty much the original mail order fishing company weren’t they – the first company I bought from mail order for sure.
Gloomy news.

TF_JohnHI used to walk around the shop frequently when I could park nearby. Now its just impossible to get a car any where near, in fact my works van has just been caught driving through a tram gate just 100m from Bennets shop and a £30 fine has been slapped on us as a result.
Dont these council boffins realise what they are doing to town centers and shops like Bennets? Whilst mail order is fine they are located close to the city center and people need to have somewhere to park.
To be solely mail order they might as well re locate in the sticks and save huge rates bills. Sorry to see them go and I somehow feel they wont be the last before this recession ends. -

TF_NW Cut AnglerHopefully somebody will take the business / name on and reinvent / rebuild what is for many an iconic brand in angling.

TF_craigoto be fair – as long as I can remember most of the staff didnt have a clue about fishing, you’d often have to wait ages to get served.
Bennetts once had an item in that nobody else in Sheffield had although it was very expensive compared to other tackle shops around the country – I asked em to price match and was even willing to pay the difference for delivery but they were unwilling to help. Basically, Bennetts were set up in a way to rip off people using credit facilities and take advantage of people that couldn’t afford to pay cash – why else would a company turn down business – espec when buying in bulk as they did?
I feel sorry for those that lose jobs but Bennetts as a shop is no loss.

TF_pr@nglerBut you could park about 100 yards away and get a great curry on the way back to the car.
Am sorry that people have lost jobs but think this was survival of the fittest.

TF_Leaky Lloydid have been sad to read this if the bennets i knew as a lad was the bennets that went under,, but it wasn’t ,the bennets that went under was a load of crap!!!
it used to be a crackin shop,, but for as big and as well known as it was,, it never had a patch on the little shop that lived in its shadows,, calcotts,, gutted when they closed after the big floods,, easily the best tackle shop in sheffield if not south yourkshire!!!
there was nothing they didnt have or couldnt get, and all the staff where pretty decent anglers!!!
there was a no hassle vibe about the place,, you didnt have to buy anything to feel welcome,, i used to go to scoots for my hair cut,(god rest his soul)
then walk round to calcotts for a good chin wag while waiting for the bus!!!
it didnt matter that you didnt want anything,, always a warm welcome and a brew waiting if yer wanted one!still not good to here of another tackle company going out of business though!!
bennets of old was class,
that fish tank and the little cinema area to watch the latest vids was a crackin idea too!!!
wouldn’t look out of place today them to qualities! -
