I thought the Tackle & Guns show was upbeat and one of the more innovative items out is a new Browning swimfeeder called The Drop (see picture below, courtesy of Angler’s Mail).

It looks like a cage feeder that someone trod on, but is attached in a way that aids casting, and the big bonus is this design rises to surface quickly on winding in.

Browning also has a new Hybrid range in the shops soon – a halfway house between carp and match/pleasure gear for commercials.

I did a show for OnlineFishing.tv at the show which will be on the channel any day now…

How does it aid casting exactly ? It looks less aerodynamic than a conventional feeder I agree with the bit ” looks like someones trod on it “!

            i thought the same thing!

It has a ‘wing profile’ so, if either side is the same generate lift on the retrieve and not spin but may produce more drag as the ‘front’ is blunter than a conventional feeder.

Casting, baring in mind that the drag from the line and friction from the line going through the rings will probably far outway the aerodynamics of the feeder, is largely immaterial.

Way back in the day when distance casting at Coombe Abbey for bream was the sport, polishing rod rings and your rod gave you about 10% more distance (and I do mean polishing!).

Daiwa Harriers used to come to the top. Skimming method feeders seems en vouge but does the poor quality of the tension of line lay effect accuracy if you are using this method as you seem to get a yard or so without tension followed by a ‘loose’ one?

Getting the distance isn’t a problem but wind drift is imho as you suddenly get a few yards of spare line dragging the feeder in the wrong direction.

This appears to be a thread hike! lol Would appreciate your thoughts however!

The way it would fly through the air when casting is for sure more aerodynamic than a normal cage feeder and on return it has the shape of a wing which would make you believe it would climb faster.

It seems wider than it is long which makes me feel casting accuracy and distance would be compromised, I would be very surprised if this feeder would cast as far as a feeder that has the lead on the bottom.

If your fishing a 35 yard chuck thats a snag pit then this is the feeder you want.

I don’t know one single wing on plane, kite, airship etc that doesn’t have a covering over the frame! Even in the first World War the skeleton wooden wings were covered in canvas and paper.

That cage feeder is about as aerodynamic as I am and would create even less ‘lift’!!

It would cast better being the other way round with the wire at the thinner end.

Deffo right there but still will be all over the place because of it’s shape, anything that cast’s a long distance has the weight forward i.e. bullet maggot feeders, arsley bombs, this would be like casting an old coffin lead sideways if you remember the coffin leads.

they do come to the surface quicker similar to one Ivan marks did years back for coombe abbey good in snag pits shallow water and weedy pegs worth trying ~shh funny how the old ideas come around

How do they do that Joff?

Surely there is no wing effect without covering the frame. A Sopwith Camel would be hard pressed to fly looking like that!

A plastic feeder of that shape would plane OK but I bet if you dropped one of those cages into a swimming pool whatever way it went in it would sink straight to the bottom. Maybe I ought to buy one to try it and see but I am sure I would be wasting my money. Maybe they will send me some ~clap ~clap

I suppose that the way it is rigged the lead itself may provide a little lift. If it does though, the shape of the feeder has nothing to do with it.

I have been trying stuff that don’t look right since the newark needle float, that didnt look right either, and for a while now I go with my gut and say “does it look right” if my gut says no then thats what happens I don’t try it till others have jumped in head first.

He still wouldnt do it. Even when i said i would make him some more, he said it was a waste of a good feeder.
