TF_dirkdigglermmm not sure on this one,
remember he has had the most thankless tasks for a good while (england captain)
he’s been married to that hideous creature forever.
worn a skirt,
lived in america,
had several appaling haircuts,
had his boots chucked at him by saf,
surely the poor bugger deserves some recognition just for that lot

Yeah and Beckhams won more than enough to win it.
I most of missed the newspaper reports where it said Beckham was an alki, PROVEN to have cheated on his wifes and girlfriends, beaten them, left his children and fathered another two he’s never seen.

TF_herbienwca ive watched more football than you ever will starting at turf moor in 1956. during the 60s/70s i never missed a united game inc the reserves if it didnt clash. george was brilliant to start with but he played with lots of world class players, law, charlton, stiles, crerand, herd, morgan,to name but a few. once the papers made him their bitch he got lazy played maybe one good game in 10.sir matt busby would never have let best move from united if there was even a small hope of that tallent he wasted coming through all the booze. so for the BBC to give him an award in (2002 i think) was a joke , the media looking like the rest of this country , through rose coloured specticles. ask yourself one question nwca. what did he achieve after 1968, for anyone exept maybe the news of the world. when i watched the amount of work beckham put in on our belhalf at the world cup farce i was proud of him. never felt proud of besty, just pity at a genius gone bad

Herbie you can watch as much football as you want and never actually have a clue about the game. If you want to belong to that category then so be it.
I come from a family of footballers and spent as much time playing the game as watching it. My father had spells at Burnley and Blackburn in the 60’s.
Anybody who compares George Best the footballer with David Beckham the footballer amongst a group of top footballers and claims Beckham was somehow better than Best would get laughed at in their face. Footballers are more likely to tell you that Best was perhaps the most talented British footballer ever and the debate would be Best / Matthews and Finney certainly not a 1 footed player who could not dribble past an opponent, could not head a ball, could not tackle and even stopped using his one great skill (crossing) when he too became a media circus. At least Best had a disease as his excuse what did Becks have as an excuse.
People Should remember Best and be proud of being able to watch a footballing genius.
I always smile at the ahh but he wasted his talent blah blah Of course he could have played longer at a higher level but really is the latter part of his career any worse than Beckham’s. Again, at least Best had a disease. Best was playing at the top level at 17 in an era where anything went, he played nearly 400 games for United, nearly 600 in total. Not many play so many games.
I stand by what I say Herbie if you think Beckham is even fit to lace the boots of Best you know nothing about football.

TF_piperpilotBest was more then likely the first to fall foul of that filthy lying trash called the British media. Maybe if ‘Spin Doctors’ had been around in his playing era then it probably would have been very different. Nowadays these so called celebrity types don’t do or say ANYTHING without their ‘Publicity Agents’ approval,

I actually think a son turning his back on his own father is incredibly low. Throw in the admitted infidelity with Rebecca Loos whilst his Mrs was pregnant that you want to ignore and then alleged multiple affairs incl prostitute thereafter and then your Beckham walk on water whilst Best is scum stance becomes ludicrous does it not.
Not much difference is there really ~think

Why oh why do people want to talk what X has won in a TEAMSPORT. Beckham was and always will be a very limited footballer who only had one foot and his one skill was crossing. He worked damn hard via his father and at Man U to become the best player he could be. Thereafter he became a media whore and forgot that he had to work incredibly hard to make the most of minimal talent and has stole a fantastic living thereafter.
However, for people to compare him to Best or Borg or Navratilova or Ballesteros is plainly silly. I would argue Kenny Daglish for example is far more deserving and was far more talented as a footballer and to my knowledge a more decent man. That is just one example without even thinking.
Like all awards, the BBC Sports Awards are now a media sham and pointless.

TF_WagglerI think Beckham was nowhere near world class. Very ordinary and predictable in my eyes. Scholes and Giggs are by far better players.
He was “Up there” cos he sold shirts. He wouldn’t tie Best’s boots up -

His talent was as a marketable shirt and memorabillia salesman, which is why he was valued so highly and promoted by those whose financial interest he served.

Having a fallout with your father is different, didn’t he write a book about his son without him knowing, they seem to be friends again now.
Maybe he did have the affair with Rebecca Loos but every other single claim in the papers has been proven untrue including the prostitute one, which he’s sueing the magazine as we speak for around 20 million, the same company that owns the angling times.
I never said he walks on water but he’s a saint compared to Best, you know the wife beating alki who left every single one of his kids. Lets not forget prison for drink driving and assaulting a policeman.
He even had a second chance with a new liver at the expense of the NHS and he messed that up. And don’t give me any of this he had a disease, he chose to drink.

No offence Mark but you really are dumb. Alcoholism is a disease. Hence why Best’s mother died from it and so did ultimately Best. Perhaps in the morning and in the clear light of day you will realise how ludicrous it is to criticise a family/person suffering from a disease yet supporting somebody who simply / freely chose the way he lived.
You might also realise that Best made it far easier for future generations of sportsmen / women to be helped I.E Media / public limelight being the guinea pig for all that followed as the first sporting media star.
I have only talked football but Dick Clegg or David Beckham? Steve Davis or David Beckham you could go on and on.
Glad AP won. Pity Taylor did not. Still 2nd is good. Imagine Taylor 2011 SPOTY, England Match Angling – 2011 SPOTY Team, Downes/Addy Spoty Unsung Heroes.
BTW – The 2010 Team of the Year England RL Academy Team 2-0 victors over Australia.

Nobodys perfect but i was talking about alcoholics who the majority of the time end up being unable to work, claiming benifits and have health problems brought on by themselves.
I am not a drain on society, i do eat right, don’t drink(stopped 18 months ago, my choice)and don’t smoke.

LoL you are conversing with a non smoker and somebody who stopped drinking alcohol years ago but like you and everybody else, there will be some way we are all a drain on society.

Erm if you smoke then certain unlucky individuals are increasing the likelihood of getting cancer. erm if you drink alcohol, certain unlucky people run the risk of becoming alcoholics. Do I need to explain the link between being overweight/diet choice and diabetes.
A perfect choice.
I do love this notion of choice. My neighbour across the road loves a pint, on last order he orders several pints. He is not an alcoholic and hold a successful decent job / decent family life. I know somebody else who having drunk a small amount of alcohol became an alcoholic. It is a disease. Please explain if it was a choice how some individuals can drink vast amounts of alcohol and not become alcoholics.
Alcoholics are addicts with a disease.
Smokers are addicts who by smoking increase their chances of getting cancer. Hence the Govt Health warning.
