I solve the problem by not going. But I believe people use glycerine to stop them icing up.

Feel for you – I always found that when this happened it was God’s way of telling me to pack up and go home!

Heard about glycerine too for this, but never tried it – it is also called glycerol and is the colourless liquid version – Boots do it as well if you can get to them.

thanks for that, got a boots just up the road so not a problem, must admit it was a tad cold,a foot of snow but the river just oozed fish, caught well in between the thawing of the rings.
                thanks again

Nearly every chemist stocks Glycerine, it’s used for caughs. It’s about a quid a bottle and sticky as honey!
Once rubbed round your ring(s)! keep the tip out the water and you will have to re-apply it owing to the fact that the water on the line washes it out of the rings on the retrieve.
Take a tooth brush with you to apply it, as you dont really want it on your hands due to it’s consistancy.

Glycerine is the thing to use as above but also the choice of rod: A lot of modern rods have very small diameter guides and these seem to be more problematic with freezing, literally five or six turns of the reel and you have an iceberg on the tip and the line stuck solid!

Although I haven’t fished in subzero conditions for a good time, my rods with wire rings were the ones to use in these conditions.

appreciate the replys… on the rod front, both rods have small eyes/rings, daiwa sweep fire trotting down the inside and map power wag across the far bank, both were frozen after almost every cast, not just the top eye but the top 3, some times 4, so will get a new toothbrush at the same time~clap
                      thanks again
