I was lucky enough to try the full range of the new precision rods before the big freeze at larford lakes , they are quality.

I think the £50 is just the name you’re paying for personally.

I use Drennan rods and think they are brilliant, honestly I can’t see how rods can get any better and that’s the reason for the above statement.

depends what the rod is for really i used to use the carbonactives from the preston range an they were nice an soft prob too soft to be honest. i now use the fox fx range an there spot on for what i do an they cover all my fishing. sometimes you need a rod wit a progressive action an a bit of backbone for slighty longer chucks. all rods do differant things differantly an ur prob best of tryin a few of ur mates an see what they r using an think until u find one that suits the venue you fish. have a few chucks etc. i know alot of ppl have personal brands they stick with but all rods can be improved imo. for an extra 50 quid i would buy the preston one or the 10/11ft dual feeder by fox as i have a puddle chucker an there not as good.

I think there is a load of tosh talked about this rod and that rod when the truth is if whatever you have has a decent through action and is married up to a half decent reel with a front drag then as far as carp fishing is concerned it’s good.
Where not talking delicate bites for christ sake, the bloody things drag your rod in given half a chance.
Stick with what you have mate and treat the wife to something instead.~clap

If the Drennan is doing everything that you want of it, why change?

Personally, for almost all my straight bomb and close range method feeder work I use an almost antique Silstar Traverse X 3587-320: It will bend to the corks, has fine tips should you need to fish for F1’s and is a quality bit of kit that you could pick up for less than £20 on eBay.

I’ve got two and they are certainly not for sale. Hillbilly uses a couple of 3587-290’s I think although he has altered them for his style but uses these shorter rods up to 40yds!

3545 is a similar rod also worth a look out for. I use the 285 for bomb/feeder over pole line work.

If I was choosing new rods then personally the first thing i would ask myself is how much use is it going to get. If its minimal then I would tend to go for the budget option, as there are some cracking cheap little rods about nowadays. If the rod was going to get a fair bit of use or a bit of a hammering then i would probably go with a model that has quality fittings, like the guides, whippings, reel seat etc. Also don’t forget the action is also important for accurate casting as well as fish playing action.

Bought the Preston 11foot mini a while ago and have to say its fantastic.Not a tackle tart so i try and buy what i need rather than whats in fashion and boy is this what i needed.Lost very few fish on this rod and if your as cack handed as what i am then thats saying something.At around £120 its a steal!

I was lucky enough to try before you buy on my local lake with one of these rods and I didn’t really like it. I thought the eye spacing didn’t blend well with the rod action, it’s also bit stiffer than the puddle chucker.

I settled for a Dawia Tournament Pro 10/11ft, which you could pick up 2nd hand with your budget.

I would recommend trying a few different types first to see what suits your venues and what feels right for you.
