TF_Fred Davisone of the websites is selling the range of suveran rods for aound £84.99 as opposed to the RRP of £179.99, obviously the rods never sell for the rrp but even so I can remember I think these rods going for at least £120 maybe more, I presume the tackle dealer will not sell at a loss, so I do wonder what is the true cost? I dare some rods made in china for around a tenner then command £100 plus prices when they hit these shores, do we really know where a rod is made and the true cost? and does the same apply to poles made for a pittence sold for top dollar? advertising is indeed powerful for the must have next item possibly covering up the true cost of manufacture? are us anglers a gullable bunch in rip off britain? or you get what you pay for? Just a thought lol
Have a great and prosperous new year to all anglers we need the dough lol

TF_dirkdigglerif it’s the shop i think it is?
the guy who owns the shop has a habit of buying up all the stock of whats left in a particular pole or rod in the country and then selling them on cheap.
i got a shimano aspire pro a few years ago and it was half price.
i reckon really that can only be seen as a good thing for the angler.
i do feel that 2011 will be a bumpy ride for most if not all of us so i reckon we could be seeing a lot of people sticking with what they’ve got and unfortunately tackle dealers suffering with everyone else. -

TF_p2hl_p2hlWell I wouldn’t be too surprised a at rod with production cost of i.e. $10 ending up at £100 in your local shop.
I know the T-shirt market better. A “good” T-shirt i.e. BOSS has a price of $1 directly at the plant. And they and up costing £60-£80 high street… the clothing market does have a very high mark up though…
But consider this
Unit cost price
+ The price of transport from the Far East
+ Import taxes
+ Cost for warehouse facilities
+ Cost reps
+ Advertising
+ Profit label
+ Transport to the shop
+ Shops margin (profit)
+ VATAnd many of these are +’s works on a percentage, meaning the cost of the item increases exponentially…
The funny thing is though that the only ones who seem to get rich from all this, are the Chinese, and they are only involved at the $10 level…

AnonymousThis begs a number of questions:
1) Who cares ?
2) What business is it of ours to try and pry into others business ??
2) Isn’t the products only worth or value what the purchaser puts on it and pays for it ?? -

TF_squattWhat about a £270 14ft Shimano Aerocast feeder rod. For a dealer to buy in it’s £112+vat. Good mark up in my eyes. How much do Shimano pay??

TF_ndm3108Do you have an issue with someone making a mark-up/profit?
WHat do you think is reasonable as a mark up on goods sold? It annoy’s me that we discuss what the tackle shop is making on an item when all around there are tackle shops closing because they can’t make a profit.
In the business I work in we run on around 35 to 40% gross profit, thats GP not net profit. Now on some items we might make 70 or 80% mark-up but on other items we are lucky to make 5 to 10% all in all it balances out, but we need to make these kind of margins to make the business profitable and therefore keep our jobs.
Remember as well that the lower the turnover the higher the profit margins need to be to make it viable. -

TF_NW Cut AnglerI do not see why anybody has a problem with the question posed / the thread. Quite an interesting topic.
My mother owned a Fruit & Veg Shop 20+ years ago. Profit per item generally was 15-20% I guess that was the nature of the business.

TF_Fred DavisThere are a lot of strange things that seem to go on in the trade, especially with new product where almost a universal price is given by almost every tackle shop, Price fixing?, does it go on I wonder? yet a year or two down the line the same product is advertised for sale at a give away price! at the end of the day the market should decide the price, but with the tackle manufacturers only supplying to those shops who have an agreed contract set up, this must affect or stop free competition, are they shooting themselves in the foot, with tackle shops on the decrease insisting on an agreed contract to spend a minimum ammount is surely contrary to any growth and maybe making tackle shops buy stock they know they cannot sell. Not a great situation for the tackle trade.
