Well fella’s there have been quite a few discusions of weather breaking the ice is good or bad for fish,, after seeing these images from kjs fisheries in killamarsh sheffield, i think the results are quite conclusive,,
i know what id rather do, this owner has made no attemp to break the ice and as a consequence it looks like he’s wiped quite a few fish out,,,
and i for one think its a disturbing image of things to come,
if you own a fishery and you have machinery to clear breather holes,, for pitty’s sake, please do it!!!
        these images are heartbreaking!
not a good advert for our sport at all !

Been fishing since i was 5 and its heartbreaking to see images of dead fish due to owners mishandling there lakes……..

When a dog or any animal is abused then they are prosecuted or banned from having animals again and i think Fishery owners who abuse there fish stocks should be reported as well….

            TF_Nigel.

              Thanks for posting these LL.
I have said it on here so many times, that
              you must break the ice.
I was the chairman of the Professional
              Coarse Fisheries Association
last year, and i did a press
release after a week of the
ice last year, to try and
              inform every fishery and
              angler that you must break
the ice. And still over a
year later the advise is being
              ignored, these pictures are
              proof of that.
The ice is OK for a week or
so, but after that it needs
              breaking regularly,
i have done mine every other
day for the last 6 weeks now.
It only takes me an hour,
              fortunately i have a JCB
so it makes it easy, but
i have 8 ponds to break,
              nd i do it religiously.
              Its like putting cling film
              over your goldfish bowl, the
              water will suffocate, keeping
              fish is about keeping water!
What a shame, there will be
              others too. There will be
lots of club pools and farm
              pools that have been ignored
over the winter, i am afraid
they will have the same fate!

I tried to make it narrow
so it was readable, as the
                thread goes wide when you
                add pictures.

Well said Nigel, keep hammering away mate.Lets hope the AMATEUR fishery keepers take note, but i dont realy think they will.In my experience of them, they will just overstock again, and batter the fish, after they have been in a couple of weeks. Some owners have no idea about rotation ect, of their lakes and some suffer the concequenses of ultimately loosing there livlyhood,a bad thing for the anglers in the short term but better for the fish and fishery in the long term.

Its not the only venue to have had big numbers of fish losses this winter. Green bank park lake in Liverpool has lost lots of fish. You would think after losing most of the fish from Walton park lake last year. That they would have learnt the lesson. Both lakes are council run and give free fishing. Not that there are many fish left in those 2 lakes now!

                                                      TF_pr@ngler

Stopped going to KJS about five years ago after a couple of unpleasant days there

Took my son and was shocked to see hundreds of fish just hanging beneath the surface. They were so dopey I scooped a perch out of the water by hand. Eventually the owner called the fire brigade who hosed the water to re-oxygenate it. I assumed this had something to do with stocking density and not enough effort to oxygenate the water.

Last time i was there there was a thick dark scum on the water. I had to keep cleaning the float bristle as it was getting so stained I couldn’t see it.

These places would go out of business if we didn’t use them. Its a commercial fishery, so let the market have its day.

Hi Nigel, its a sad site in deed. We have at least 2 fisheries down here (Swindon area) that have lost fish. One club lake……lost at least 400 carp…. don’t like you breaking the ice as its supposed to shock the fish!!!!!

The other…..don’t know how many dead but a lot…..can’t be bothered to break the ice even though he also has a JCB.

                                                          Keep the message going.

rather take that chance and let the air in and gases out.

Any news on the other shallow waters on the same complex? am i right in thinking fish in deeper waters fare better under ice?

that is probably not an overstocking problem but it sounds like a water quality problem, all lakes emitt poisioneous gasses but shallow ones with a lot of silt are a ticking timebomb when ice covers the surface.

Is the lake your talking about shallow?? and do you know if it’s ever been scraped and fertilized??

Seems strange then that i fish canal matches in mid winter, where sometimes as many as 80 plus anglers pegged 20-25 metres apart are breaking the ice,and i have never seen a single dead or dying fish because of this.In fact,on most occasions fish will begin topping and feeding within 10 minutes of the ice being broken, and weights can sometimes far exceed those matches fished on the same pegs during ice free conditions.
