gmanParticipantQuestion 1: Is this the best rod ever made to date? In my humble opinion for my style of river fishing for Roach & Chub, yes it probably is. Question 2: Are they worth the £300-400 recent ones have sold for second hand on ebay?
Six months to a year ago they were selling for £120-140. The ones fetching this money are advertised as having been used 6 or so times. Blimey they’re 15 years old and it begs the question as to why someone paid £250+ in the first place!! That aside, it’s only these mint examples that are fetching the silly money. The last one I purchased was missing the butt cap (£140) and in fishing terms what difference does this make? On ebay probably £50-100. My point in writing this piece is that these rods are, I suspect, being bought by collectors to hoard in a garage and never be used again. What a shame!! We may never see another rod of this quality for many years and what a shame they are not being used for what they were first designed to do, catch fish.
Earlier today a second hand 13′-15′ extension went for £65 + £5 p&p on ebay. Last week I bought a new original Jap Diamura extension blank from tacklebargains for one of my Titans for £30. The two original fuji titanium sic rings sell for £3 each and the black and gold whipping cost pennies. The whole Normark 2000 thing has gone silly.
As a final thought I picked up a latest model Tournament Pro 13′-15′ second hand a while ago for under £200. A different action to the Titan 2000 at 13′. Titan 2000 wins for my river fishing at this length. The Tourney is less forgiving in the tip but at 15′ the balance of the tourney is in a different league to the Titan 2000 + extension so for my crowquill fishing it wins hands down.
For those looking for a steal, and the hassle free world of ebay auctions the Maver Reactorlite 1 aint far from the Titan at a fraction of the price. -

TF_NathanWatsonI have 6 and use most weeks, paid between £75 and £170 for the used 1s off Ebay etc and wouldn’t pay more than £200 but they are the best rods I’ve used, along with the Microlight and Avenger and better than Tournaments in my opinion although I only use at 12 or 13ft normally. Not tried Carbotec though!

TF_Waveney OneYou are not getting your hands on my Carbotech’s Nathan. I only have the feeder rods but they are brilliant!! I discovered that I had a left a tip on the bank the other week and was gutted.

TF_Waveney OneYup, 60 mile round trip – no sign, not even broken bits. Mind you it was a week later as I didn’t know I had left it until the next Saturday and it wasn’t in the tube.

TF_squattI had a Reactorlite no.1 £90 and a Titan 11, not a 2000, £125 several years ago. The Reactorlite was a slightly beefier rod but had a very similar action. Both rods imo are utter cr*p. They felt nice until you moved them, then they had the recovery rate of a split cane rod. Sold them both for what I bought them for and bought Daiwa – I shouldn’t of listened to the hype.

TF_NathanWatsonHeard the Titan IIs are crap but the 2000 and 3000s are brilliant, better than a Daiwa Tournament and loads better than any other Daiwa which are quite poor in my opinion, whereas their feeder rods are brilliant!

gmanParticipantThe Normark II series were later rods made by Masterline with blanks sourced in China. The Avengers and Microlites aren’t too bad but they never got it right with the Titans (rumours abound of a bad flat spot between the tip and middle sections)
The 2000’s & 3000’s were produced by the original Normark crew with blanks from the Diamaru factory in Japan. Story has it there was a change in management in Japan and the price of the blanks rocketed. They were already a luxury commodity at the time and with the price hike production stopped as they were no longer economically viable to produce.
I suppose if you are looking at a top range rod from new (ie Tourney Pro 13/15)you are not going to get much change from £300. So in answer to my own original question if the consensus is that the 2/3000’s are better rods you’d have to take it on the chin and say the ebay prices of £300+ are justified.
It’s a shame that after 15years no manufacturer has managed to source a blank that can match them especially when you consider the huge step forward in carbon technology with 16m poles. -

TF_Double BlankAny tackle item is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. Sure my Titan was good near £300 a long time ago, but there are better “Tools” out there now, much better.
I wouldn’t want mine back, sure 20 years ago it was a dream, so was my Milbro Enterprise 14′, but now I am sure there is better, it was good gear for the time but….
On the subject of cost, I bought a John Dean stick float rod, they were about £110, my mate bought 10 into the shop, the invoice in the box had them at about £9 each from the factory, not rung but, they were be snapped up at the time.?It’s what you can get for it, what Joe Public will pay, poles are a classic, you can get good gear with quids off the RRP if you “deal” behind the counter and the “Brand” doesn’t get to price fix it.

TF_craigoThe titan II was released twice – once with greeny/blue highlights on the whippings and then again with an extention to 15ft with gold highlights.
I have the 1st titan II and its actually a country mile better than my other orginal titan (not 2000) – somebody says the titan II’s have a flat spot…..i think half of people dont know what theyre on about on these forums or comment on stuff they’ve never used. The titan II is one of the best rods Ive ever used and Ive fished and still match fish at a pretty high level after 35yrs of fishing…..seriously, if there’s any fat spots I’d show you my balls.
Ive got a selection of Normarks both feeder and float rods…..the blanks on the originals are awesome but the runners and handles are a bit out dated, had the butts on my orginal titans coverted by terry smith to seymo screw down reel seats which help.
There’s no way Id pay 300 for a titan now as there’s as good rods available like the drennans.
Only rod I think has never been surpassed is the Microlight
