I depends how many you want but for hook baits and a few in a feeder, to get nice soft long but still deeply coloured coloured maggots all I do is roll them on my leg.

If you want a few for feeding, then my local tackle shop sells them frozen cheaper than fresh. To do them in a kitchen, put cold water into a box. Add boiling water until they stop wriggling then add more cold quickly or run under cold tap.

For a few on the bank then I am afraid you will need to sacrifice some coffee or tea. Just pour it onto the maggots.

Freeze them in half pint batches overnight they don’t distort and remain fairly firm although i only use them as part of a spod/balling in mix.I use a freshly killed maggot as hook bait usually in pairs. This is done by rolling the maggot across you thigh while applying pressure with your fore finger.Only use part frozen maggot as totally frozen maggots are buoyant.I’ve caught lots of bream/carp while using deads… although today was cxxp ! This is an excellent method for using up any left over maggot as it can sit in the freezer for along time. Problems…Fussy partners, best to have your own freezer/rack and be careful if you like a curry bags of rice and white mag look similar while waring beer glasses !

boiling water in one bait tub
              maggots in another
place the one containing maggots on top
              non streched dead maggots

Just buy them from the tackle shop, tip ’em in a plastic bag and shove them in the freezer.

That’s it, when thawed they look exactly like like live maggots minus the movement.

Tried ‘boiling’ them, rolling them and everything else and they end up long and soggy, just bung ’em in the freezer.

Long and soft is exactly what you need for skimmers. That is why I roll them on my thigh, just like Cuban cigars, except that I am no Latino Beauty ~think
