Going to be fishing a venue with a good stamp of roach that make up most winning weights. Is it worth setting a line up for h’s and t’s in the winter? Also, what hook would you use for seed fishing? I’m afraid to say I’m a total noob when it comes to seed fishing and feeding.

ACM. This is normally considered by most to be a Summer and Autumn approach. In Winter, I wouldn’t necessarily lead with it, but I’d certainly feed hemp for an hour or two along side your standard feed. Once the fish are there and confident, you can always try a tare or hemp on the hook from time to time and see where it leads you. Occasionally, they’ll switch onto it well, but it’s not guaranteed.

Thanks mate. I know it can do some damage in the summer, just wondered about the winter. I know sweetcorn was always looked at as a summer bait only upon a time. So was just wondering if anyone else had play with it in the colder months.

I certainly wouldn’t rule it out, but consider it a backup line if there are a few about.

Can you recommend a good hook?

I’ve bagged up at the Recreation Ground in Stratford opposite the theatre in the depths of Winter (end of December 4 degrees with a crystal clear river) on hemp and literally had only put it on the hook while going through the changes as I wasn’t catching that much: With hemp on the stamp and frequency improved astronomically!

I don’t think that I would ‘start’ with it but it is a bait that I think never does any harm and carp love it too!

Hemp and even tares do often work in winter. Feed very little but often (3-6 grains every few minutes) and leave the swim to build up for at least a few hours before trying. The longer you leave the swim alone the better. The Leeds/Liverpool canal as an example produced many match winning results to hemp in the winter. Those who generally do best in matches feed hemp for the first 3/4 hours before finally switching to hemp. Tares seem to be a switch bait that can pick out the odd big dog roach that has seen everything before.
