With the weather and water temp rising, i have started using paste again with much frustration.

Had 3 carp out during an open match on Tuesday and lost 14 during the match! Bad angling i know!

I was feeding 4,6 & 2mm pellets with the paste into 6ft of water.

The peg began to ” fizz ” at which point i stopped feeding pellets and just used the paste.

The bites were very fast and i was hitting them, sometimes the bites were met with a fish 2 feet off bottom.

I decided to drop a shallow 4-5ft rig with meat over the top to see if they were shallow which didnt seem to be right either.

Are they just not ” on it yet ” or was i doing something wrong?

Hi Wayne, I fished it today at Farview and won the match, I don’t think they are really on it properly yet but we’re getting there. I tend to just feed a pot of 4/6mm pellets with some balls of paste at the start and then about 20-30 with some more free paste offerings every other put in with the paste, then if it goes quiet I pot in again and give it a short rest. Maybe with feeding all different sized pellets they were falling through the water at different speeds causing the fish to come off bottom thats why you were foul hooking them on the way up. Or they were milling around above waiting for the free offerings as there wasn’t enough on the bottom for them to get their heads down on.

I only feed micros when paste fishing, have you tried that?

i dont think there is a way round it mate it is just a frustrating bait to fish.

There’s no doubting a true paste bite, it just disappears – I reckon once they suck it in they can’t eject it like a pellet and they tend to steam off.

Ignore all the slow dips and the bobs, wait for the floar to disappear or, occasionally, to suddenly pop straight up as one picks it up off the bottom.

The bites i am hitting are proper paste bites!

The float shoots under at 100mph.

Not the slow dips and pulls.

i might be wrong but if there very fast bites i think your getting line bites
i wait for them to take the float down about 6inches when the paste acts like an anchor any push on the paste or line will bring the float down
the amount you lost i think had just come on the feed a upturned carp feeding by your paste its tail could hit the line 1or2 feet higher for you to hook and loose
i pleasure fish and have more time to wait for the bite to improve
try just sitting it out intill they self hook
                      i only use 6mm pellet
you do get times when they want to cruise and hit the line high and get foul hooked if this happens i fish tight in away from cruiseing fish

a fish could also just shake the paste with its head giveing what looks like a fast bite
