TF_Croydon_Dave[align=left:3l0u24a0]Peter Hill was one of the great match organisers of the past 30 years. Apart from running the Sussex Summer League and Winter League, he witnessed the dominance of Daiwa Dorking in the Super League. His initial tussle with cancer saw him retire at 55 from his plumbing and heating business. But never one to sit on his hands, he worked as a volunteer for a decade in the Post Room of Crawley Hospital.
Uniquely he ran matches where the top prize was a brand new car but perhaps never quite convinced the match fraternity that it was a no-strings attached arrangement. Having survived a serious health scare in February, almost his last act when he was in control was watching the FA Cup eating a chocolate eclair!
Tuesday May 17 saw him rushed back to hospital where he detiorated rapidly and finally passed away on May 20 at 10.15 aged 68. Many a match angler quaked in fear when he bellowed: “Ere, I want a word with you!” but his bark was mostly worse than his bite, though one or two cheeky youngsters got a clip round the ear including a young Gary Hamilton!
With his wife of 20 years, Pat, they ran the Bob Nudd Junior match annually attracting 70 youngsters along with other small matches. Undoubtedly, angling has lost one of its true characters.[/align:3l0u24a0]

TF_tomleggeSad news Dave, my condolences to Peter’s family.
You’ve said it perfectly, Peter sure was a true character. He ran the Angler’s Mail Drennan London & South East Super League Premier Div from the get-go under the initial Sundridge sponsorship and for at least ten years after and I was his liaison at the Mail throughout.
In the early days I used to dread answering the phone to hear that gruff voice which always began ‘Ello, it’s Peter…'(No surname needed!) It meant at least 20 minutes earbending plus a major problem dumped in my lap for an instant verdict.
The lads in the office used to crack up at my expressions as he ranted away, but over the years I grew to love Peter’s calls. He always told it how it was, with enough malaprops to give even Dickie Carr a run for his money!
Peter was one of angling’s givers and doers, unlike some of his detractors.
RIP old chap

TF_Croydon_DavePat, Peter’s widow, is very keen to see as many of Peter’s friends/anglers as possible at a celebration of his life.
This will be held at the newly furbished barn at Greens Farm, Newdigate on a date to be confirmed but probably on the afternoon of June 2 or 3.
Neither of the couple were particularly religious and so there will be a simple committal at the local crematorium and then over to the celebration, so no morbid all black.
I will confirm the date when I know it.

TF_mp.miloRIP Peter, had some laughs with Pete when he ran the West Sussex winter league,Good bloke who will be missed.
I remember at Willow Park on one of his matches where he greeted my travelling partner Ian Chatfield with a punch on the arm, giving Ian a dead arm for the whole 5 hours.Still laugh about that now. -
