Looking for info on top quality stick/balsa floats to use on the Trent..got some lignum sticks and also use the Peter warren with alloy stems. Is there any other ranges anyone can recommend..dont tend to see many in local shops//

My John Dean, John Allerton & Dave Harrells aren’t bad. Don’t know what ‘new’ floats are like maybe try Drennan.

Try the Pete Warren dome-topped sticks with nylon stems. They cast well, sit right in the water, and are easy to hold back/overshot.

I suppose you don’t see them in many shops because most like to catch pigs with fins now a days.~think

Most of mine are Pete Warren,John Dean or Max Winters.Christ knows why I still have them living as far away as I do from the Trent and only fishing commies.Which ever you choose I hope you blank!
Seriously good luck and please post how you get on.Keep saying that I will have a day at rolleston or maybe clifton bridge but the drive would kill me.

Two things come close to those old patterns. Drakes are excellent. You can mail order from Avon Angling in Ringwood. Also, Gaz Malman has made some which are the closest thing to Allertons I’ve seen. Not sure he’s selling them yet though.

I imagine the floats you’ve got already will be as good as they ever were but I am using premier floats small dome tops a lot these days.

I used them almost exclusively on the trent and Dyke leading up to and during the national last year in sizes 9no6 and 11no6.

I find if you almost overshot these domes you can do anything that you can do with a shouldered pattern but they seem to fish better in tricky winds. I think it’s because they sit lower in the water but with the right shotting you can make them talk.

I use very little lignum these days. I think it’s probably something to do with longer rods and feeling the shotting pattern working better through a light alloy.

                          Forgot about Woody’s.

Dave, you’re going for dome tops these days because of the old age effecting your eyesight.

I’m launching a brand new range in the very near future under my new Dave Harrell Angling Products label.
The range of running line floats will include new designs of wagglers, stick floats, avons, bolos and speci wagglers and will be available from selected stockists throughout the UK.
Watch out for reviews in the weeklies and monthlies and have a word with your local tackle dealer if you want him (or her) to order some in.
In the meantime, if you want any more information please drop me a line to:
