Guys, Brian Hull fishing an NFA Old Boys match last week at Kestral Lake, Westwood Fishery near Boston last week had three barbel on pole and worm down the margins. The best was 11 lb 2 oz. Has anyone heard of a larger stillwater barbel?

Had my first ever barbel on Orchard on Sunday, never even seen one in the flesh before as never fished anywhere else that has them.

Had three altogether, only about 1 1/2lb or so – what beautiful little fish and went like stink, absolutely chuffed.

An 11lb 2oz barbel was caught at Heronbrook in 2009. Picture on the Heronbrook website. http://www.heronbrookfisheries.co.uk/htm/match.htm

Some very big fish reported from Cudmore but i,ve never seen anything over 11lb so might just be pleasure anglers stories of massive barbel.

Also, some massive barbel caught from Hampton Springs. Not sure how big those fish go to but well into double figures. http://hamptonsprings.co.uk/gallery/

                  Dave,

Makin Fisheries produced the then British record barbel when Billy Makin owned it. Mid-teen I think. Obviously Billy wasn’t popular with the purists for that one!

                    I shouldn’t think so.

                    It’s bordering on animal cruelty.

Given how well they thrive, barbel seem to be very happy. Then again I understood that every species was dynamic and constantly evolving.

Weston Pools Oswestry has them too, some doubles figures, cracking fish, lovely condition and go like they have v8 engines up there backsides!

Because rendering a wild animal captive in an unnatural environment is cruel IMO.

It’s like having elephants and bears in shackles to provide tawdry entertainment.

                                Not anymore.

Although, last season the river only fished well enough on two of my visits where it would have been worth wetting one.

A lake near me has a barbel over 11lb which comes out to carp anglers a couple of times each year. The lake is bordered by the Colne on one bank and I presume it got into the lake in a flood. The fish seems healthy and obviously content in it’s somewhat unnatural environment. It always seems to appear on the bank furthest away from the riverbank so as yet nobody has tried to return it to the river.

I hear what you’re saying Rob but you don’t need me to tell you that many, many barbel have been eaten by otters in their ‘natural’ environment of rivers over the past year or two. Rivers might be the natural environment for them, but with otters increasing at such disproportionate levels, if I was a barbel, I think I’d rather be in a commercial these days. It’s certainly safer.
