I fished the opening day match on the R Yare today, there were 85 of us out there! I drew the worst part of the river and weighed 7lb 14oz for 2nd in a 6 peg section. The winner had 76lb 12oz on one of the ‘fliers’, Peg 23 I’ll put a full report up later. Keith already has 70 names for Saturday so another good match on cards.

Now that is a proper match in all sense of the words.

I went down to my local club stretch of the Colne, fished caster and hemp on 6m whip. Roach, dace, perch and bream showed . I was surprised at how few anglers were on the bank. Mainly they were new members so I spent a lot of the day trying to put them on the good swims. I know a lot of people had to work and it was persisting down with rain, but it seems to me the old magic of the 16th has gone for many, probably due to all year round stillwater fishing……

Had a walk down Burton Joyce only saw two fishermen looked like they were fishing for Barbel I remember when you couldnt get a peg if you didnt get there early

I fished the road side at Burton Joyce ( a couple of pegs below the outfall). Apart from a group of big fish boys on the outfall I had the place to myself. According to the bailiff there were 8 of us from Gunthorpe bridge to the Ferry Boat – that’s a lot of river bank.
Although I believe I will continue to be there until they are nailing the lid down I can understand why others don’t. I had to work very hard with a stick float, at distance, in gin clear water for around 7lb of dace and chub, in 6 hours.
The shock of the day came when I was asked for £6 for the day ticket – which was purely for the right to be stood in the water with a rod in my hand.
It is not difficult to understand why vast the majority would rather pay a similar amount for a managed amenity and relatively easier, more comfortable, fishing.

Just got back from a session on Gt Ouse below St. Ives after a week dragging weed, clearing swims and prebaiting for the bream. Got up at 2.45 to be ont he water with 2 mates by daybreak. There was virtually no flow and the water was gin clear (could see the bottom in 9+ feet of water). Not surprisingly, the bream didn’t play ball, so we had to occupy ourselves with bleak, dace and perch. Not even any roach turned up! I think we’re just too early.

I fished the Thames, Medley, on the opening day. I arrived at 1st light and there were 3 anglers already setting up!
I fished at the top of the poplars and had 6 bream for around 30lb on the feeder and worm but I think I was the only person out of the 10 fishing the stretch who had any bream. I fished from 4am through to 9.30am but never had a bream after 6.45. The river is static and it was certainly hard.
I fished the channel in the evening and had plenty of perch, a couple of hybrids and plenty of chublets. At least on there there is a little bit of flow as it is much narrower.
1st match is sunday on Medley and the channel.

Had a walk on one of my club stretches of the Thames yesterday, 50 pegs only 200 yds from a secure car park and not an angler in sight! Popped into Runneymede this afternoon and no one around until two blokes turned up to prebait for tomorrow morning – must say the river looks sock-on with a bit of flow and a nice tinge of colour but it looks like the Glorious 16th has finally died a death !

I fished the Witham first day arriving at first light having pre-baited my pegs for three nights. Connected with 11 proper fish out of the numerous bites on maggot, corn or worm. Lost 7 of them, 3 times hooklength came back bitten off. Net result 4 slabs. Fed the peg again after dragging some weed out Thursday night. Tried again Friday, rapid wrap round bites straight from the off over the pre baited area. Was tearing my hair out as missing these seemingly sitter bites. I finally managed to get 3 in the net…..eels. I guess that answers the question about all the missed bites and bite offs doesn’t it. We have not seen as many eels in the Witham for many years. My mate had an excellent few hours whilst it flowed slightly as he caught a good net of hybrids on the waggler.

Best net I witnessed was 16 fish for 68lb. But there were many blanks (aprt from eels). Even banker pegs like Reedy Bay were fishless.

Reading this makes you appreciate how fortunate we are to have the Yare on our doorstep.

I had 26lb on opening day, with only one fish over 2lbs, and most people made double figures. Yesterday people struggled for 7-8lb but these were some of their worst weights recorded for a number of seasons.

Hi all fished the Trent around Bleasby on Saturday..started off on tip hoping to get a few Bream but after a couple of hours and a few perch decided to switch to stick float fishing caster and hemp..took a while to get em going but managed to net around 15lb of roach,skimmers and few Chubb and even a couple of Rudd!! in around 4hrs.Fish a chuck towards end.
Most of the fish being in the 4-6 oz bracket fishing up in the water.Gonna give Clifton a go Tuesday for Barbel. 😀

Child Beale on the Thames today was all big Bream mooching up and down the same 6 pegs. Unfortunately if you weren’t on them you’d had it, very few small fish showing although that has been a problem on the stretch for a while now. I’ve fished the Thames for 35 years and today was the first time I’ve ever blanked in summer, not so much as a sucked maggot. 🙁
