Word of warning to anglers fishing near the canopy of oak trees beware of this little creature very nasty piece of stuff and the hairs are very harmfull and irritable and will cause breathing problems seems to be spreading quite rapidly around the surrey middlesex boardes round our way not to be assumed as brown tail moth but similar symptoms ie breathing problems and a rash :: . This is not a wind up so beware feel free to google the O P M web site for more info, nests will bee found under the large branches and look like a fine webbing structure, not to be played with so please heed this warning , f blues please take note its on your doorstep PS O P M stands for Oak Proceesionary Moth named by there habit of follow the leader when leaving the nests in the morning to reach the tip of a branches where they will feed on .the leaf structures which in turn de foiliating the branches the female of the species can fly 7km hence the rapid spreading area

I work with and manage trees for a living and in all seriousness this is an horrible pest that has come over from abroad.

As has already been said this time of year the caterpillar thrives on oak tree leaves and foliage, they have loads of small hairs that can easily break off and become airborn, these can cause serious irrtation to the skin and breathing problem for people with asthma. If you are fishing and suspect that this pest is around i would report it to the fishery owner.

There is also a simliar pest called the brown tail moth, which again causes skin irritation and they can be easily identified by silken woven tents on branches etc, with the caterpillar inside.

one bit of adive DONT touch these caterpillars stay well away.

If anyone wants more info then PM me.
