        Hello all.

Fished the New Junction on Sunday in preparation for the Div 1 National. I drew the end peg (528) and only managed 5 perch. I fed 5 balls of groundbait at 11.5 metres by hand to make some noise etc. My mix was 2 parts VDE G5, 1 part Black Secret with about a third of leam in. 1 ball contained a few squatts, casters and a bit of hemp, the rest were just groundbait. Following this I only loose fed 5-6 grains of hemp. I did not catch any roach dispite trying a bulk rig and a light strung out rig. Around me some anglers balled, others cupped. However they all seemed a manage a few roach.

Being close to the match day my confidence needs a boost, and on the way home all I could put it down to was the feeding. I reckon that even if the rigs were not quite right some fish would have obliged.

After the match I picked up some good info to sort rigs out etc, but would be grateful if anyone could pass on any info about feeding and groundbait mixes that work.

Hopefully confidence will get boosted on the weekend.

        Thanks in advance.

        Tight lines.

i would be inclined to catapult squatts or pinkies over it, roach love a falling grub bait.
also a standard approach seems to be start at 3m for anything then onto 7m with someting like you described, then 11/13m as above and finally the longest line you can do. this should be a bonus line really.

Hi scrubba, we have been putting some time in on the junky over the last few weeks, dont think you will get much info on any w/site leading upto the national as everyone is keeping stum , especially the locals ! lol. The roach are very difficult to catch especially after the pressure the venue has had , one thing we have noticed about the junky is that every section fishes slightly different and need to be fed differently. The junky is a fair venue and there are fish to be caught and like all nationals come the big day someone will draw on a load of fish ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ps end pegs have usually been solid   ๐Ÿ˜€

Hi mate,i have not fished the canal lately but the hook bait that always worked for me was squatts.i used to fish it all year round ,at this time of year i used to feed short with hemp ( by hand ) and fish either hemp or squatt on the hook but try a tare occasionaly. On your groundbait line i would start with squatt on the hook and loosfeed squatt over the top but watch for canal towing before you loosfeed.I often tried other baits but they were no where near as good as squatt in fact if i couldn’t get any i would fish somewhere else.

                  Thanks for the replies.

Looks like a hard match is on the cards.

Dodge, I know what you mean about everyone keeping quiet, not much info flying round. As you say somebody will get a netful. As for end peg, well I think my groundbait had bleach in and my squatts were poisoned. I had a bad day, but I was expecting a bit more, very frustrating

The legend that is Alan Scotthorne was next but 1 peg and had just over 6lb to finish second in the match. The bloke next to me caught some nice roach late on to get 3lb odd. Most people were sratching around for perch around any weed cover in their peg. From where I fished those that had weed in their peg caught best, needless to say my peg had very little weed in it. The water was very clear. Perch might be the life savers.

Like some of you I will have a 400 mile round trip ๐Ÿ˜ก

Can you give any info on the state of the canal like its depth, does if tow much, is there a lot of boat traffic etc, etc.
This would help in making a few rigs.

Hi mate, make your pole rigs up from 7ft to 10ft , the venue averages around 30 mtrs wide but there are some narrower bits and some wider bits. You tend to get more bites on the pole line when it tows towards sykehouse end but sometimes its still and sometimes it tows the other way when locks are opened , some proper boats come down it ….. oh and bring a platform or a least a footplate as you have to get in the canal on some pegs. Hope this helps as it is all i am allowed to say lol

ps Doncaster AA website has some useful info on it .

LATE TEENS did it again on sunday i think the match started at 19 and the angler had 8lb odd most of the other 32 anglers down there struggled for a pound

Had just under 2lb from below Low Lane Bridge area. Good weight here as most seemed to be struggling to break a pound.

Will Raison was on the end peg before the aqueduct (136 I think) and didn’t weigh in, although I believe he had kids jumping in off the bridge which couldn’t have done him any favours!

Simon Fields was on peg 124 catching a roach a chuck i’m led to believe while again hardly anyone could get a bite. Denis White made 5lb a few pegs to Will Raison’s left. Barnsley may have it sorted then, although i’d expect them to!

1 kilo will be very good points in most sections, if not all. The canal seems to have been flogged with matches (DDAA have been running 3 a week) and it’s fishing rock hard

Early Aqua pegs are not in.
E sections starting at permanent peg 148 (just right of wall) through to 207 top lane.

DAA ran opens twice a week on Weds & Sats using only the pegs that will ne used on national day.

Mr Caygil ran the sunday opens in conjunction with his happy league and
making a good job of it too, although may of used the odd few pegs not included next saturday to keep the section format tidy.

                                            Hope this helps ๐Ÿ˜‰

there are some long walks at Pilks, i had to walk 70 pegs there on saturday. but as a general rule the access is good and the walking is good as there is a path behind many of the pegs.

Permanent peg 32 on – A section Peg 1 on Pilks will be the longest walk, that assuming they donโ€™t reverse peg it on the day, if so then it will be Peg A59.
Other than A section there is plenty of access points along the whole length and as Joe says the tow path makes for easy barrowing.

Personally Iโ€™m hoping for a mid access point draw as all the commotion will in most cases walk the fish down .

Good luck to everyone, especially the Lancastrian Fellas as theyโ€™ve put a lot of time and effort in.
