Our lake has a really good head of double figure carp – many of which are taken using floaters at the moment and I often wonder what it would be like to try them on fly fishing gear. Has anyone tried this and if so what would be the recommended rod weight and end tackle etc.
        I have 2 fly rods – a 5/6 weight and a 7/9 weight and I also have a salmon rod.

        Cheers

Alan Sandom who is a coach living in Ashford, Kent regularly uses a fly to catch good carp. He even managed to land the largest authenticated carp from a water we controlled at one time.

For double figure carp I would personally pick your 7/9 rod, be much more fun than yanking them in with the Salmon rod, but the Salmon rod would be ideal if fishing near snags.
A large Arbour reel with 7/9 fly line to match the rod.
Rig end, 6ft of Preston Powerline in 0.19 on good days – 0.17 if there being cautious, with a Bonio fly on the end – the orange bit on the top lets you easily see which one is your fly from your dog biscuit freebies.
Best sort of fishing you will ever have for a few hours on an summer evening 🙂

                No probs
Keep it light so you can move around if need be.
All I take is the rod, landing net, unhooking mat
small backpack with spare rig line, spare flies, scissors, disgorger, dog biscuits, small towel and some drink.

I have all that and am really looking forward to it once I get some bonio flies
