TF_Dr.PhilItaly have just staged a mega-successful championship covering all forms of the fishing disciplines. England came up home with Steve Ringers individual and the Junior , Intermediate an our Ladies brought home success. I am sure there were others with the disabled ,casting, fly fishing etc..
IF WE HAD A CHAMPIONSHIP LIKE THAT – WHERE COULD WE HAVE IT ?
ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR RIVERS AND LAKES THAT COULD TAKE THAT MANY COMPETITIONS KNOWING THE BIGGEST MATCH COULD HAVE 40 TEAMS X 5 ANGLERS ?? OR ARE WE LIMITED ? -

TF_Waveney OneI am not sure exactly how close some of the venues in Italy were. It also included beach and boat sea fishing so that is included in my answer.
So the answer to your question is the Rivers Welland and Witham. Both have held matches well over 200 angers on a regular basis not so many years ago. They would both need a lot of work weed and swim clearing but where there was a will etc….
Both rivers also have some fly trout fishing on their upper parts. There is Rutland water for fly fishing and if that was netted for coarse fish and the stock transferred to Witham and Welland they would provide some superb sport!
The beaches around Chapel Point, Skegness, are well known for beach fishing and there is the port of Grimsby where there must be some charter boats. The Humber Estuary could also provide the beach sport.

TF_geepsterParticipantThe North Bank of the Nene maybe – it’s fishing well at the moment – but it’s mainly bream skimmers and hybrids and those are fish that won’t handle seven consecutive days of pressure.
The world champs venues that get better as more food goes in are usually the ones with carp in them… -

TF_Dr.PhilWhat ever venues you choose the location has to be good for spectator viewing and car access for competitors. Thats where Rivers like the Severn , Trent , Avon ,Wye etc…. would struggle a little especially if your are looking to cater for 200 pegs.
The Drains and rivers like the Welland and Nene even the Thames could offer a good alternative . England canals possible lack good access but i think i could be corrected on that.
The feeder match could be great on the Trent or Severn .
The junior,Intermediates ,Ladies,Disabled,Vets could be good to have closer to the Main float and feeder matches – but what size of town could take all the accomadation ?
Sky would do a great job on the media side and i think all the tackle companies would do a great job on the selling side with the expected 1000’s of spectators coming to watch – bigger than Eversham ?
I think England could make it a spectacular covering all fishing disciplines like Sea,fly ,casting ,carping etc….It the home of fishing after all ! -

TF_joffmiesterjust shows how the Europeans are catching up with us ,our own team competitions are spiraling out of control with more and more anglers turning to individual competitions .if we are not careful our English team standing in the world champs will falter .OK the Italians were on home soil perhaps a big advantage but they blitz it
like the topic suggests were in the country could you find a venue like that with carp as well as bream, roach and the others all swimming together
the writing has been on the wall for the past few years and if we are not careful we will loose our edge 😉
holme pierrepont would be the ideal venue but would need hundreds and thousands of pounds spending on sorting the place out ,you could stock the right fish in it which we should of done years ago instead of letting it go to rack and ruin
i know the last world champs there wasn’t that good but didn’t we still win it 😉 -

TF_Dr.PhilMany a true word spoken Joff !
Team angling used to be the thing in the 70-80-90’s , is it really that bad a decline now ? I do remember when the Makins league started it was 20 teams of 12 , now ? Is that the norm. now ?
We have the potential in England to get the best Fishing Olympics ever presented but the money would have to come from all the fishing institutions ,advertising , media , sponsorship etc…..as there would be a huge audience for this kind of spectacular.
If Pierpoint was used it would have to be protected from the scavengers (Cormorants) and that means changing legislation to really control the menace. Its not worth planting loads of fish from the NRA only to see it eaten . ( Unless the cormorant population has decreased since i was last in UK)
Could part of the NRA licence be given up for a re-build on Holm Pierpoint ? Would the goverment chip in ? , we are spending alot on the 2012 Olympics! Also could we get money of the lottery (ooops bad question) ? -

TF_steve rJubilee River between Maidenhead and Windsor. Uniform width and depth, flow can be altered as required. Great for spectators. 2 massive hotels right on Junction 6 of the M4.
Only 20 miles from London and 60 miles from the South Coast. Plenty of decent fly-fishing venues within travelling distance as well. Disableds could be held on the rowing trench at Dorney which is just behind the Jubilee and has excellent access and viewing facilities [it’s being used for the Olympics next year].
This was suggested to the NFA about 10 years ago but the high-ranking person who visited the sites with me [no longer in that position] told me that this country would never host a World Champs in the South whilst Dick Clegg was still involved !

TF_JohnHA bit surprised Keith has not come in on this one yet. We have covered this before and certainly the Nene was a viable option. It makes sense to work with the rowers as they win a few medals at least, and a rowing course would make a super venue.
I recall Home Pierpoint is now too small to hold the event but understand a larger course was available in the South. I think its connected with Eton college and is where the olympic rowing will take place next year.
The bottom line is that there has to be the will to make this happen. No one would wish a repeat of the 1993 H Pierpoint event which we did win but the event was a low weight affair where perch dominated the low scores (as the bream had all been eaten by you know what).
Our national body is just not strong enough as too few anglers are prepared to pay for it so I fear the status quo will prevail and no WC will be held here for many years, if ever. -

TF_Dr.PhilI believe the Italy fishing olympics covered 9 disciplines and advertising played a large part in its promotion as it was backed heavily by the Italian giant tackle manufactureres. Not sure about its national tv being involved but i’m sure the SKY would not pass down a good opportunity to televise so many events ? (you only have to look at the Fishomania coverage).
If suitable venues were found and they would be several as sea fishing ,carp fishing ,fly fishing and casting form part of the events. Then the chance of the Tackle manufacturers to have exhibition/sale villages would be an enourmouse boost to the busines with the expected arrival of foreign visitors.
This would of course need goverment ,sports council,NRA, Lottery etc… backing to really make it an event to remember or ‘ am i wishing on a star’ ? 🙂 -

TF_sillysodi know quite a few people ho would like to do the team fishing thing but the local teams just dont want to know even if you put the time in practising, they close ranks and drop you even though youve been producing the goods.

TF_lumpthere must be some big reservoirs in the UK? how many pegs is a world champs?
-
07/09/2011 at 7:15 am #148191
TF_Dr.Phil200 pegs normally but then you need venues for fly fishing ,carp fishing , then you have classes of angling for Intermediates ,juniors ,vets ,disabled ,ladies . Also you will have sea angling. The venues would have to have good access for competitors ,spectators and media.
As Joff states : HolmePierrpoint is our national centre !!?? ….it begs belief !

TF_joffmiesteranother venue would be rutland water again the right size loads of room for all competitions it would again need loads of money throwing at it plus permission as its a trout fishery   but the money it would make to the local economy would be worth it
i took the kids around it on there bikes the other week its full of silverfish 😮 its a long shot i know but from a spectators view you’d be able to see everything -

TF_rik_jI would like to see a single big event pulled off first, like an EC or a WC.
The traces from Holme Pierrepont and Trent aren’t really promising.

TF_CraftytaftyI saw on the east mids news last night that Nottingham Council who own Holme Pierrepoint were asking for a major investment from somewhere to develop the sports side of things which I imagine would involve angling .
Not to take over but work alongside them in a partnership. I didn’t see the entire feature but it was for there and Sherwood Forest. -

TF_Dr.PhilThere has been some sound advice and thoughts given by the various TF members to this subject . I wonder if there are England management / fishing media / and further high profile anglers/writers willing to give their point of view via their alias’s ?
For me their opinions would also give a guideline and hopefully a ground swell to get something moving towards an English olympics in fishing !?
After all England is one of the largest fishing industries in europe relative to head of population. -

TF_p2hl_p2hlyou dont back the AT — so you cant have the WC,,,,,
it is not (just) about venues
in 2000 on the Trent it was 1 steward pr 2 anglers in many areas, not the required 1 steward pr 1 angler… this really was a sign of the lack of backing amongst anglers that the event had…
To organize a succesfull WC you need a really strong organization behind it (and money), and you dont have that in the UK… and by the look of things this is not about to change any time soon…
ask not what the AT can do for you, but what you can do for the AT… and btw you are the AT… 😀 (but anglers will never learn)
I come from a place that will never ever ever host a wc or any thing like it, for very much the same reasons… 😡

TF_Dr.PhilTotally agree that organisation is the key to a successful ‘fishing olympics’ but England does have that ! They have media , tackle companies queuing up for sponsorship as long as attendances at all the fishing venues give good impact for many expected 1000’s of fishing fans.
But the grass routes of local fishing club anglers and volunteers are the people that will make the competition as they give their time (thankless task sometimes ,been there before).
Why England is not projecting itself for a competition , i dont know , maybe we are but that information never comes out .
In Sweden where i reside there is so much fantastic bream/roach/tench/crucian/ide/rudd/bleak filled waters but it lacks commitment from its national federation who would sooner sponsor fly/sea/spinner/jig fishing . The clubs are there to help towards a fantastic fishing olympics but the chosen waters would need alot of work on them to get to a world/european standard.
