TF_AnthonywatersParticipantCould you handicap match fishing, I know there are a few matches like the Gaymers WA where you cant enter if you have won an open match but could it ever be handicapped like golf ? would a venue that implemented a handicap system encourage bigger turnouts or would it unfairly penalise the better anglers ?

TF_jasoncogginsI’d say no, there’s to many outside elements that effect things, other than just how good the angler is

AnonymousI think there is already a handicap system in match fishing – it’s called the draw bag

To a point yes,but you cant tell me Steve Ringer has drawn well every match for the past god knows how many years, the old saying is you cant catch fish of a bad peg but you can ***k up a good peg.As for handicapping, blindfold him,it might just slow him down lol.

TF_tedclooking at matchfishing now the handicap system has been implemented allready…
most guys run their own 10 pegger themselves,,,,,,,,,,,,,no one knows it,s occuring though!!!
so those venue experts are avoided… just run your own match…

TF_billy the squidParticipant13m pole limit and no shallow fishing would make it a bit more even for lesser anglers!, not on silver matches though!!

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantLike Bremes said, he used Steve as an example I will take Des Ship for example, Des top Tens at Whiteacres regardless of where hes drawn, is he just lucky on the draw bag ?

TF_markcDifficult to introduce a handicap system due to the draw bag, but you could make it a more even playing field. How about a match where bait & identical tackle are supplied ready & waiting at each peg, seat box, pole and/or rod, half a dozen floats hooks etc?

True very true look at the size of open matches !!! I fish with some lads,we have 20 plus peg knockups, we go to different venues, we dont have a venue specialist between us nor do any of us practice for our away matches, theres some resonable anglers between us some of which have fished for teams or make a couple of open matches per year, we are never sure of the venue and never sure where the winner will come from.

That would be a level playing field using generic kit and no making rigs etc at home, make as you go !

TF_billy the squidParticipantnah tbh you just cant handicap fishing like golf! a 25 handicapper could never “ever” shoot par or below on the course, but a duffer could draw an out and out flier and batter the match with a big weight doin it all wrong down the edge.

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantWhat about introducing pairs in open matches, sequences of anglers that are decided at the draw bag.

TF_billy the squidParticipantJust dont think that any kind of system would work really, prob the only natural sport left and if you wanna compete you need to put the hours in, or be friends with someone at the top of there game who shares advise!!

TF_rik_jWe actually run a pairs competition on a river where the end pegs are much better than the middle pegs. The draw is “rigged” so an end peg in one sector is paired with a middle peg in the other sector. This balances the draw a lot, in fact so much that you actually prefer two decent pegs, rather than a good and a bad.
I know it’s not directly a handicap system, but it certainly gives those angler with a poor peg a reason to try to beat just a few anglers around them, as this can be crucial in the end.

TF_scarfThis is a subject that’s causing our little club of 20 members some concern. Whilst the pools are optional, and cheap, everybody pays yet only the same seven or eight names are in with a realistic chance. So the remaining dozen have to rely on the pairs to have any chance of success. And if all 20 turn out that’s a tenner each.
Obviously, none of us go for the money; it’s about the fishing, trying different venues, banter with friends, friendly competition and getting to use a keepnet – we rarely need two. However we rely on the less competitive members to keep turning up or we won’t have a club and as the costs of travel, bait and fishing rise that puts a strain on the backbone of the club.
Next year we are considering reducing the individual sweep by a pound and putting it into the pairs. Then, using last year’s league positions, we’ll pair top with bottom to give everyone a chance, drawbag permitting.
We’re not convinced it’s the solution to falling numbers but feel we’ve got to do something to keep people interested and it’s the best we can come up with so far. -

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantScarf thats a good idea, our home matches are 3 quid and if its 20 + anglers they payout 15105 not mega buck i know people will read this chuckling but it is only club angling, we dont have a pairs system but the river system sound good pairing up end pegs with less than average pegs.
