TF_shanieboyHi all, having fished with the original tourney pro for the last 6/7 years im now looking to upgrade to a new pole. Overall the pro has been a great pole, the finish as we all know was pretty naff for a pole that sold for over 2k so fishing long had its drawbacks at times but rigidity and strength was never in question. At the time i believe it was the best pole on the market and has become a bit of a legend over the years which is a testament to the calibre of the pole.
My question is this , have daiwa poles moved on much with the pro x and the airity? yes the finish is better but how about in the performance stakes?
My other question is, after hearing some very good things about the Browning Z9 (a manufacturer i wouldnt have considered a few years back) how does it stack up against the daiwa? strenght rigidity price?? id be interested to hear peoples thoughts . Cheers guys. -

TF_Tim_DIf you liked your tourney pro so much then go for the Pro-x, it’s like the tourney pro but better 😉

TF_Big FinnParticipantIts all personal preference, Some will love the Tourny Pro, others will not.
Some with love the Browning Z9, others will not.I would say pick up both poles and see for yourself which suits your style of fishing.
But also bear in mind the price differeance between the two poles.

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantGet a Diawa, you have all your spares then everything interchanges all the topkits are the same.

TF_Fred Daviswhat I would advise is get on the bank and have a proper look, I personally think the pro x looks sloppy more so than the the origenal pro, although I have been told the pole is the same apart from the finish I am not convinced, as far as the Z9 is concerned one of my mates went to buy an airity or a pro x and I mentioned to him about the z9 when it first came out as I had seen it at the farnborough show and was very impressed, when he went to a tackle shop he had all three poles set up and compared length, droop, crispness. recoil etc, but he said the most noticeable thing was how well balanced the z9 felt at all lengths, he came out with the z9 and said it left the daiwa’s in the shade, quite a few of the postal lads have bought the z9 and they all rate this pole very highly no more joints coming loose or sections falling apart when shipping less tip bounce etc more importantly no one has had any breakages apart from a lad who broke on a 4th section his fault, in fact one of the lads is just about to sell his z9 as he is getting a z12, however the list of mates who want his z9 pole off of him after what must be two to three years of use is endless, nuff said. I have always purchased daiwa poles and still use a daiwa at the mo but if I wanted to up grade I would have to think very carefully about my next purchase despite all the daiwa spares I have I could see me ditching the lot and changing as some of the modern poles are better in terms of performance and package imo
my advice get on the bank for a proper look and ask for a waggle most lads will oblige -

TF_NathanWatsonHmm, I have a Daiwa pro and a Z9, liked the Z9 till I tried it at 17.5M and broke 2 extensions, 1 twice, within minutes! Credit to Browning, they replaced the sections free of charge but I’m scared to use it again and will stick to my Daiwa which is stiffer, compared side by side on rollers at same length.

11/01/2012 at 3:33 pm #153747
TF_Fred DavisI am surprised the pole is stiffer Nathan but obviously you have both so it’s easy for you to compare, on rollers I have had a good look at the z9 and like it, however continue to use my daiwa as it’s still in good nick, a good friend compared the poles in the shop obviously without elastics and said the z9 was stiffer than the airity at 16 metres as the diawa poles do fish well at 16 mtes plus, fished mine to 19 on one occasion still usable, or maybe he meant less tip bounce! Goes to show how little there is between top end poles

11/01/2012 at 9:19 pm #153773
TF_shanieboyYes fred i have to agree, there does seem to be very little difference between most top end poles nowadays. If there was then you would have the majority raving about one pole that stood out from the crowd and thats just not the case is it? I do think there is a lot that are very loyal to their brand and are maybe missing out by not looking at some of the other manufacturers out there. Then again theres the old adage if it aint broke dont fix it i guess! Hey i dont know ?? im just an angler who wants the best for the least and his fair share of flyers to go with it 😀

TF_fourcanalsI have had my z 9 nearly 2 years , forget the comparison with any pole look at the z 12 its an absolutally different pole its a harder overall finish(thats what made me originally nervous with the z9} I called in at fishing republic in barnsley yesterday and they let me fondle one I want it no ifs buts or maybe. its even better than the 9 the package with half butts ready top puller kits at 14.5 mtres its a sheer dream and i will go so far as to say its20% better ,bearing in mind it had no laccky in the top kit so i might be a little carried away with 20% but i would love a feedback from other z 9 owners as what they think went to sleep last night with z 12 on my brain should i stay or upgrade???

TF_Fred DavisShannie, I must admit I am a bit of a moaner when it comes to draws, I always complain of a crap draw and at times I feel as if I ain’t drawn well, however because I have won a few all my mates laugh when I moan about a crap draw they reckon I have had more than my fair share of good pegs, so we all perceive what we have drawn diferently! Although a good pole helps to improve the standard of your fishing without a doubt an angling brain is even better Rob Pottinger won the garbo clubman and the southern angler southern champs as well as too many matches on a very (weekly) regular basis (also west middx winter league individual 3 times when there were so many anglers you almost run out of towpath, there were that many pegs)some well over 150 peggers and he was renowned for using crap gear had a pole made up of spares sections from a number of different poles sagged like a bannana at 16 worst I can remember him using was a butt section with maver blue vega written on it but the rest of the pole was anyones guess? and he still won, however his current pole is a garbo G8 which he won on the garbo final, even Dave Harrell remarked it was a good job he won as he needs a new pole, he has broke the odd section which he just gets repaired, unlike the old days when he’d just telescope and look for another section to get a bit more length. without a doubt we all want a good strong very stiff light well balanced pole with a great spares package that doesn’t cost the earth, will it improve our angling ? yes to a degree, in the fact that an upgrade to a better pole should be stiffer, being able to deal with carp venues, more well balanced etc, will it improve the skill level of the angler not as much as we like to think!!!! For some it’s still a case of all the gear but no idea 😉 but it is great to use top quality gear sometimes I think some anglers do upgrade unessarily to try to improve a run of bad results or poor form, lucky devils lol  .

TF_shanieboyGetting back to the discussion iv a question for nathan you’ve obviously lost some confidence after doing 2 extensions ( dread to think what that sounded like!!!!! ) but overall how do you rate the strength of the z9? is it upto bagging on commercials ??

TF_anglingedgeParticipantgazer – if u know shane like i do , your case will stand up in court – he is always on a flier, infact i have never seen him on a bad one. 🙂

Er well that would be no again!! Impulsive, me?? Well yes i’ll hold my hands up to that 😀 – Hey in for a penny in for a pound iv decided to take a punt and take a chance on the back of all the feedback and from all the anglers reviews i have read ( to be fair i have done a sh*t load of research) roll on to getting it on the bank and seeing for myself …….

TF_paulDPeople always compare the z9 to the Pro and Airity but the z9 is at least £500 cheaper. You can still get a 9 for about 1800. Should be comparing the Z9 to the Whisker or Specie M2 which is no contest I think !!! I think even the Z12 undercuts the Airity and top end Mavers. Had my z9 for a couple of years now after daiwas and would never go back.
-
16/01/2012 at 5:35 pm #154015
TF_shanieboyPauld Regarding the comparison between the 2 poles – it was more a comparison of performance really, lightness rigidity strength etc that i was looking for. I agree price wise its a lot cheaper, so if it matches up against the top end daiwas then its gotta be a great buy…… its good to read your views that your more than happy with your z9 as iv just become a 9 owner too 😀
Whats the heaviest laccy that you’ve used thru it ?? or anyone else for that matter ?? most of my fishing is on carpy commercials using preston 17h when looking for a weight, is it man enough to handle it ??!

TF_paulDI play around with elastics and have had most in the z9 at some time. I even went silly and put red hydro throgh it once but didnt seem fair on the pole. I strongest i have now is 14 soild throgh a PMK with the tips out. I reckon it would take a 16 or brown hydro as Ive only had 1 topkit break in over 2 years but i do use the z9 power 4th for everthing. TBO i can’t feel any difference in the pole with the normal and power 4 fitted even at 16m.
Im saving the normal 4th for when i sell it. 😉
My Z2 came with powerkits and ive got the heavy orange hollow throgh some (browning but same as Garbo stuff). Ive used one on the z9 fishing long a couple of times and its been ok but find these thick hollows are so heavy they unbalance a pole so prefer solids. -
16/01/2012 at 7:39 pm #154027
TF_shanieboyIts good to kno thats its upto the bigger elastics – as i say, i sort of bought the 9 on an impulse really, realistically thinking that i would get another daiwa after owning the tourney pro after being more than happy with it overall. It was only after reading all the reviews from other anglers that made me consider a change and the rest as they say is history… 😎
Any idea on spare prices and the best place to buy from?? prob looking for short 4’s power 4’s and pmk’s maybe looking at another ext too……
-
16/01/2012 at 8:13 pm #154031
TF_paulDBits are cheap and ive paid about £50 for power 4th sections and i think about £75 for the 2 hole pulla kits which are the same cost as a PMK. I havent bought a short 4th. I just get a local shop to order them from Browning. I like to support my local than giving the big mail orders outfits the money. The stuff normally comes in a week. Dont know how much an ext will be. I’ve had a 5th and 6 (trodden on) and they came quickly and werent too dear.
The biggest thing youll notice after a daiwa is that it doesn’t stick to your hands. The fatter sections feel a bit strange at first but soon get used to it. -

TF_arrow otterParticipantHad a Z9 for about 18 mths, cant comment on if its better than a Tourny as ive never used one, however my old man has had a Tournament for years and after using mine for a day said he would swap his for it anyday.
I am a bit of animal when it comes to using a pole and its stood up well to my use had plenty of 100lb plus bagging days at Tunnel with it last year aswell as catching doubles at various other venues have no real issues with it apart from when your spending £1700 on a pole surely they could give you a spare number 4 and a set of cups.
My advice would be try them both and go for the one you feel best pleased with, our kid has got a Sensas 774 and he wouldnt swap it for anything so its horses for courses, too many people seem to say this pole is good that pole is crap and so on without probably even used one, as for a Tournament theres loads of them on the bank so that tells you theyre good and theyve stood the time test, will i be swapping for a Z12 ? nope i,m happy with what ive got so the endeth the story 😉 -

TF_boydieParticipantShanie boy, can’t believe edge has let you go down the browning route! Lol. In fairness I had a play with one at one of the fisho’s a couple of years ago and it felt spot on, don’t doubt for a second that they’re better value than the daiwa’s but as you well know there’s not a venue in the country that you could go to and feel under gunned with the pro.
Let me know how you get on with it.
Cheers -

TF_shanieboyHey Boydie, hows it going buddy, nice to hear from you. Gotta admit i never saw myself going down the Browning route either 😮 but after speaking to anglers who had em and reading many many reviews decided to jump in both feet first and get one. I got a good deal on one secondhand which had been very well looked after with a good spares package. One thing i have noticed is how good the sections look on the male and female ends, theres no wear that i can see and thats on a pole thats had 2yrs of use.you cant say that about the pro! But apart from that cant give a comparison cus i aint used it yet! Watch this space……..
Oh roll on Larford, lets give Mr Kinder a run for his money!! 😀

TF_boydieParticipantNice one matey. I’m sure you’ll give a good workout at Larford, just don’t let Edge near it !! See you soon mate.
