Just watched the above mentioned excellent interview and there was a comment that Jan made with regards to going fishing at 0400hrs and maybe that is the thing that is now missing?
I remember listening to the radio to ’50’s and ’60’s music and being half asleep, although waking up enough when going over bridges on canals and rivers to see if anything was happening….. Don’t miss the car being full of cigarette smoke though, although the smell of cigarette smoke on the canal bank reminds me of my Dad who died last year.
Maybe the doing something when everyone else isn’t aspect is what is missing with the sport today?
There is something magical about being next to water when the sun is rising and there is mist on the water and there is the frustration on it not being light enough to tackle up. The tranquility of the first few hours before a boat turns up, even, and the knowledge that the home you left behind is still deep in slumber.
