Fish week 944 (season 19,013) Returns 324 (4,790) Rod average 2.91 (3.96)
The best fish of the week at Rutland Water fell to Charles Bowers, of Spalding, who netted a superb conditioned 7lb 10oz Rainbow last Wednesday. Charles was boat fishing in very shallow water near the Old Hall (he had come across a large number of fish in this area on the previous day). The inclement weather made for very variable fishing conditions last week with the wind direction veering from Southerly/Westerly to a flat calm at times with fish on the top. Fish continue to feed on daphnia, buzzers, sedge and quite a few daddy long legs that have been blown on to the water.
There are other areas of the reservoir around the banks where fish are showing to this season’s pin fry. Good numbers of fish in the 3-5lb range have been seen especially around the Sailing Club to New Zealand Point and the top of the North Arm shallows.

Both boat and bank anglers have enjoyed better sport at Grafham Water this week with the vast majority of fish caught in the top four feet of the surface. The biggest bag of the week was caught by season ticket holder Rob Edmunds whilst boat fishing. Rob, of South Luffenham, Oakham, caught 8 trout for a tremendous weight of 28lb 12oz. His bag limit was taken whilst fishing a Di3 line with an orange blob and a small cormorant drifting between A and Q buoys.
Bank anglers have also enjoyed some superb sport generally by fishing floating lines with gold ribbed hares ear, diawl bachs, black or brown buzzers and shrimp patterns. The most productive bank areas have been the Bowl and south Dam, Gaynes Cove, Marlow Stones and G Bank.
Boat anglers have also enjoyed a good week’s fishing, but unlike the bank anglers there has been no set method for their success. Most lines have been successful ranging from Di 7’s, Di 5’s, Di 3’s, midge tip and also floaters with orange blobs, sparklers, cormorants, black buzzers, crunchers, diawl bachs, gold ribbed hares ear and shrimp patterns have all had major success. The most productive areas for boat anglers have been the Bowl, South Dam, Gaynes Cove, A, Q and G buoys, Sailing Club Bay, the Seat, Pylon Point and Hedge End.

The biggest fish of the week fell to Mr Allwood – a fine Rainbow of 5lb 11oz.Damsels and sedges are now appearing in large numbers and the fish have been feeding in the margins with many bank anglers into lots of fish. Diawl bachs and buzzers are proving successful and lures are catching as usual.

Fish week 260 (season 6,098) Returns 51 (1,148) Rod average 5.0 (5.3)
The Boils is the best area to fish at Ravensthorpe. Mick Griffin and Graeme Smith shared a boat to take 46 fish on hares ears and diawl bachs. Robin Sumsion was delighted with the lovely 9lb 3oz Rainbow that he hooked whilst boat fishing. Robin returned this fish safely to the water. The fishing over the aerators has been consistently good with fish feeding actively on caddis and buzzers in the area. Hares ear, diawl bach, olive buzzers or hoppers are the flies to try. Remember when fishing over the Boils area on any of our waters that anchoring is not permitted.
Other areas also producing fish include some wonderful evening rises around Tall Willows, the Domes and the Coton End.
The top of the water dry fly sport is still well under way. Drifting right across the reservoir with teams of wets or dries can produce great results on the right day with a good chance of hooking some lovely overwintered Rainbows. Bank fishing is best early or late with the Dam being the best prospect.
Best Rainbow 9lb 3oz returned to the water by Robin Sumsion.
