I intend to visit Ireland for the World pairs next year and don’t want to bring the wrong gear.
I understand 12 and 13 foot feeder rods for 1-3oz tips are the go along with braid (or mono for the shorter chucks).
Any recommendations on specific rods and reels would be most appreciated!
        All info gratefully accepted.

Mate get in touch with a member ‘dunno’ on here, last yrs winner cathal Hughes is on too but can’t remember his profile name other wise get on fishing talk Ireland and the guy will put you right. I am looking to do the classic and also mayb world pairs nex yr as my wife is from Northern Ireland and it’ll be home in couple yrs so I’m stocking up on gear already.
I was told maver dual band mono for shorter chicks, most of ur gushing is upto 50yrds but I also have 2 king feeders with 650 reels and braid in case I need to try threaten the horizon. There is a lot of pole fishing to be done also, 13 mtr work usually from a platform,
All in all loads to consider but try these guys and get on that ithet forum but explain who you are as they are wary because of the Eastern Europeans who have decimated some waters.
Good luck and also that’s a hell of a journey for a fishing match or 5 !!!

You need a rod capable of chucking a large g/bait feeder a good distance
For Loch Ken I now use the Browning King Feeder rods in 13ft and 14ft
The smaller one is a brilliant bream rod for up to about 70 yds. The longer one then takes over and I can comfortably chuck 100 yds with that one
They both come with a good array of tips between 0.5 to 4oz
They are not expensive either. I think I paid about £170 in total for those 2
It’s not all Megga chucks though, so a nice 12ft rod for a shortish dob is also needed

I use Daiwa TDX 3012’s and Daiwa Caldia 4000’s for feeder fishing matched to a 12′ Match Winner feeder rods. Having to cast miles in Ireland is only a myth and on all the venues this year a 40 – 50 turn cast was adequate. However don’t get caught out, as coxp001 says pack a rod capable of casting distances just in case. I use the Tournament Pro 12/13 for this. Feeder wise you will need both standard, cage (kevin leach feeders are the best) and rocket type feeders from 20 gram to 50grams in size. I use braid with 5,6 & 8lb shock leaders for all distances. Give me a buzz when you get over. Is Dara Finnegan coming? I grew up fishing with him.

Well said Cathal… except for the last bit which I have highlighted 🙂 🙂 🙂

In all fairness Cathal Hughes has hit the name on the head, his record speaks for itself. Just be careful what you put in groundbait wise. Its all about knowing what to put in and when to put it in.

Most anglers are fishing with the same kit at same distances but it is the little differences that can count 😮 😮 😮

                  Dunno,
Ur dead right you guys are always in the mix and Cathal has delivered in the biggest way possible with the pairs,,, I don’t suppose you’d be available to offer guidance on ground baits etc if I pm you in new yr,,, I understand the concept Cathal used to just catch everything rather than go for bream but a decent gbait mix would b good t know,,.. Ps I’ve sent you money for pole!! Matt

Thank you guys for your help. I will be fishing with Dara Finnegan and we also hope to fish the King of Clubs and/or the Mickno weekend. Once we have details and dates, we can plan accordingly. I really look forward to coming over, the fishing and the craic!
                    Cheers, Glenn
