Glen Tanar Estate Celebrates Opening Of New Fishing Hut
Fishermen have had double cause for celebration at Glen Tanar Estate on Royal Deeside with the opening of the fishing season and the unveiling of a brand new fishing hut. The launch of the Sandy Bay fishing hut on the Deecastle beat is part of the Estate’s ongoing programme to maintain and upgrade huts along the four beats it manages on the River Dee.
The new hut has been created to provide fishermen with a little piece of luxury during their time on the river, which offers up some of the best salmon fishing in Scotland. It has seating for 12 people, a wood burning stove, composting toilet, solar-powered lighting, and parking facilities nearby.
Sandy Bay is the sixth and main hut on the three-mile beat, which is jointly managed between Glen Tanar and Dinnet estates. A bank and ghillie-sharing agreement with the Dinnet beat opposite allows fishermen to enjoy both banks of the stretch and doubles the length of river available in the spring season.
Sales manager at Glen Tanar Estate, Fiona Martin, says, “The opening event was a great success; we had a fantastic turnout of around 40 including local fishermen and representatives from the Dee District Salmon Fishery Board. All were very impressed by the new hut and the facilities it includes as none of these were available in the old hut that Sandy Bay has replaced. To make the day even better there were three salmon caught over the four beats.
“We are always looking to see what we can improve for our visitors and although the Deecastle beat was already an exceedingly popular fishing beat, we hope that even more fishermen will be making their way to Glen Tanar to take advantage of our first-rate facilities.”
Glen Tanar Estate manages four beats on the upper stretch of the River Dee, which have been used by anglers since the 17th century. The beats stretch from Craigendinnie, west of Aboyne down to the Headinch and Cambus O’May beat, east of Ballater. The beats stretch for over 16 miles in total and have yielded an average of 569 salmon catches per season over the past five years.
All fishing on Glen Tanar Estate is fly based and can be booked by week, part week or day, subject to availability. Fishing with a ghillie is mandatory in spring from March to June, but can be optional during summer. All salmon fishing on the estate adheres to the Dee Conservation Code of catch and release.
Glen Tanar Estate is close to Aboyne and is under an hour’s drive from Aberdeen. In addition to the walking and cycling trails, it offers outdoor pursuits, pony trekking and fishing. It has a range of luxury self-catering holiday cottages sleeping from two to 11 people. For further information visit http://www.glentanar.co.uk.
