        Rutland Water
Fish week 1166 Returns 157 Rod average 7.42
The first full week of the season was very impressive with a rod average of 7.42! The weather remained consistently cold but finally warmed up last weekend and the sun came out. During the week Cameron Neil caught a Brown off the bank and returned it safely to the water, having weighed it first on fellow angler Rob Edmunds’ scales for 10lb 5oz.

Other notable catches included the best fish of the week – a 6lb 8oz Rainbow for Phil Webb from Derbyshire. Phil was one of a group of 7 boat anglers, members of Derbyshire Fly Fishers, who recorded 51 fish on the day with a good number in the 2½lb – 3lb bracket.

Season ticket holder Roger Marshall netted a 6lb specimen which went 6lb 2oz taken off the bank on the Peninsula. Regular Grafham angler Andy Linwood, made a trip to Rutland and came up trumps with a very solid looking 5lb 11oz Rainbow which fell to a black buzzer from Whitwell Creek.

With the wind finally turning from East North East, bank anglers were taking fish in Church Bay and the Normanton area. Prior to this the Dam, Sykes Lane, Whitwell Front, Whitwell Creek, Yellowstones and Old Hall had all been producing fish.

Boat anglers fared best off Normanton, Sykes Lane, Barnsdale, Old Hall and Hambleton Wood. A number of areas, like the bottom of both arms, haven’t yet been fished so expectations are high. Another 2,000 Rainbows were stocked during the week bringing the total so far this season to 21,200. Prospects are very good with fish being caught in many areas of the reservoir, insect hatches have been steady, but not prolific – settled weather should help.

With a change in the weather over the weekend large numbers of anglers have enjoyed some good fishing at Grafham Water. The fish are still in fairly close to the bank so the bank anglers along the North shore are having good sport. The fish are lying quite deep at around 8 – 10 feet down, with the best flies being lures in black and green.

Boat anglers are also enjoying good sport in the same areas along the north shore as well as the Seat and Q buoy.

If the weather continues to warm up the buzzer fishing will start with a vengeance, there have already been some small hatches on the warmer days.

The best fish of the week went to Mick Foster, a fine Rainbow of 8lb 10oz.

With the recent improvement in weather conditions anglers are enjoying some good fishing at Pitsford Water. Over 10,000 fish have been stocked to date and it will only take a slight rise in temperature to get the fish on the feed and anglers will have a bonanza.

There have been many limits from the bank with Duffers, Stilton, Bog Bay, and the Cliffs all producing. The best methods from the bank have been intermediates with black and green lures or black buzzer. Boat anglers have also been taking good bags of fish with several overwintered specimens in the 4-5lb bracket. The best boat areas are the Causeway down to Stone Barn and the Pines.

Peter Hartley, Anglian Water’s Head Coach, took four Beginners out to fish the bank at Stone Barn and was delighted that everyone on the course caught a fish, including one gentleman who had a nice Rainbow of 4lb 12oz – not bad for a first trout!

        Ravensthorpe Reservoir
        Fish week 248 (334 season) Returns 47 (133) Rod average 5.2 (2.5)
The fishing this week at Ravensthorpe has been superb with fish taking lures on intermediate and medium sink lines along with buzzers on floating lines.

Last Thursday Messrs Bayes and Mitchell took 54 fish between them, many in the 4-6lb bracket with their best fish weighing in at 8lb 8oz. The following day Chris Tierney and his boat partner Mr Moorcroft took 30 fish between them with the Mr Tierney landing a superb Rainbow of 14lb 2oz – the best fish of the week and the season to date. This was safely returned to the water.

The milder weather last weekend prompted a good buzzer hatch with the fish readily taking nymphs fished on a floating line. Several anglers reported catches of 20-30 fish.

Bank anglers have also been catching off the Dam and Platforms but the hot spot this week has been the Coton End.
