Fish week 987 (36,706 season) Returns 365 (8,278) Rod average 2.67 (4.43)
Just what everyone has been waiting for…..the South Arm has come alive this week with plenty of fish showing, including some fine grown on specimens. A number of fish over 4lb have been recorded from Manton Bay, with the best a superb 6lb 6oz Rainbow taken by Paul Wilson of Somerset. Paul fished an intermediate line with a green and black Dunkeld and was understandably delighted with the fish. Jonathan Marsh of Elmsthorpe near Leicester caught the best Brown of the week – a 7lb 10¾oz specimen taken from Manton Bay on a tube fly. Most of the sport has been on floating lines with nymphs such as hares ear, crunchers and damsels. Lures have also accounted for plenty of fish, patterns such as cats whisker, cormorants, humungus and black tadpoles have been producing. When the conditions have been right some exciting dry fly sport has been on offer for the dry fly enthusiasts. Daddies have worked consistently well and towards the end of last week there have been good numbers of sedge hatching on which trout have been actively feeding. The area between Gibbets Gorse and New Zealand Point has also provided some good sport. The main basin has been consistent around the aerators using various sinking lines with blobs, boobies and lures taking most of the fish.
Bank anglers have found fish in range along the Normanton bank now that the water temperature is slowly decreasing. A number of limits have been achieved from the Blue Pipes to Fantasy Island to both nymphs and lures. Opposite the Normanton bank at Sykes Lane fish have been taken in Stockie Bay to the same tactics with fish responding to dry fly in the right conditions. On the Peninsula the most consistent areas this week have been Yellowstone and Spud Bay to Half Moon Spinney.
Prospects for the week ahead look good with a lot of fish seen moving in various areas down the South Arm into the evening. The weedbeds are still extensive down both arms, harbouring a great deal of food for the trout including fry, snail and corixa. Not many boats have ventured down the North Arm but if the South Arm is anything to go by it could be worth a try. The fish don’t seem particularly interested in the fry at the moment but this could soon change with water temperatures dropping we could experience some very exciting fishing.
Please note there are no boats available Saturday 28 September to 2 October inclusive, with the impending Anglian Water Airflo International.
Competition news
Inter services loch style match Tuesday 17 September.
The R.A.F. won the event with 85 fish weighing 206lb 3oz including some time bonus for individuals. Altogether 42 anglers caught 223 fish.
The weather during practice days was not the best with strong winds along with some heavy showers, match day saw the wind die down in the afternoon, with fewer showers.Boats were pretty well spread out from Manton Bay, through to the fishing lodge frontage and on to the Normanton shoreline.
The top individual was the Navy’s Graham Henry who had an excellent day in Manton Bay with eight cracking fish by 1.30; included in the weight were two rainbows over 5lb, the best one being 5lb 5¾oz, the best in the competition.
Graham’s total bag weighed over 27lb with an additional time bonus making it 33lb 3oz overall.

The biggest bag of the week at Grafham Water was caught by Graham Turner. Graham took a magnificent bag of eight Rainbows with four weighing over 4lb from the Seat on a floating line with GRHE.Grafham Water has again fished well for both bank and boat anglers with 33% of the trout caught weighing over 3lb. Bank anglers have enjoyed tremendous fishing with the South Dam, Gaynes Cove, the Seat, Hill Farm and Deep Water Point all producing good consistent catch rates. The most productive methods for bank anglers are floating lines with shrimp patterns, diawl bachs, damsel nymphs and GRHE.
Boat anglers found fishing a little on the challenging side at the beginning of the week, but as the week went on the fishing really improved. By the end of the week the most productive boat areas were Gaynes Cove, South Dam, G Buoy, Deep Water Point, Hill Farm and Savages Creek. The best methods from the boat are floating and intermediate lines with sparklers, tequila blobs, humungus booby, GRHE, crunchers, diawl bachs and sunk daddies.

Fish week 149 (11,401 season) Returns 43 (3,359) Rod average 3.4 (3.3)
Pitsford Water is fishing very well with the weather cooling and the weedbeds beginning to die back. The rod average is climbing steadily. Bank anglers are finding gaps in the weed and are reporting some really nice, fit fish around the margins on fry patterns.Boat anglers continue to find a huge number of fish in the Narrows both in the middle and around the margins.
Season ticket holder Trevor Hall took his limit fishing floating fry patterns around the weed beds. Tony Dighton had six good fish fishing minkie patterns.
Fish are showing all across the lake and other productive methods are daddies and hoppers fished either dry or pulled and dries are also accounting for good numbers of fish.
Father and son Bill and Alec Ferguson had 15 fish to the boat fishing either cat’s booby and diawl bachs washing line style on a slow intermediate, or daddies and claret Bob’s Bits fished dry. Alec reported great sport on a four weight with plenty of hard fighting fish in the 2-3lb bracket.

Fishing at Ravensthorpe is good with a healthy rod average of 4.1. Dries are catching well with fish up in the water. There are plenty of larger fish but for the time being they are evading capture. On Friday 20th the reservoir hosted a match and barbecue for Briggs/Forester FFF. 22 anglers from the forces enjoyed a great day of challenging fishing. GNR Lawton had four fish and GNR Rushin took the largest fish on the day at 3lb 9oz.
