The new season at Ravensthorpe certainly started with a bang! Anglers who fished on Opening Day were treated to some frantic action with most taking large numbers of fish. The rod average since opening day is running at over 8 fish per rod.
Ravensthorpe regulars and season ticket holders Pat Flynn and Brian Coleman set the bar high early on bringing over 40 fish to the boat. Brian had the best fish on Opening Day day with a cracking Rainbow of 10lb 12oz, whilst Pat’s best fish weighed 6lb 12oz.
Mick Griffin and Chris Skillen took over 20 fish, fishing bloodworm and nymph patterns around the island.
The Cooper party reported boating 120 fish between the four anglers in their group, catching on various lures, cats whisker, humungus and black and green.
Other notable catches included 25 fish for Phil Longstaff – his best fish weighed 7lb 8oz. Mr Fleming took 20 fish from the Island and Simon Hunt and Angus McFadglan had 20 fish from Mongers.
The best bank areas were Mongers and Platforms 2-6. John Smith fished here and did particularly well as did William Earland.
Pitsford Water
Pitsford Water opened its doors on 1 March and despite a frosty, foggy start the dozens of bank anglers who came early had a bonanza with fish in the margins around the whole of the reservoir. By 9am there were many anglers reporting bag limits and some cracking hard fighting fish.
The best areas were Bog Bay, Stilton, Gorse, Gravels, Sermons, Stone Barn, and Pitsford Creek. Methods varied from floating lines with buzzer and bloodworm to intermediate or slow sink lines with gold head lures such as black/green Pitsford Pea or Cats Whisker.
Bob Hindmarsh had 8 fish for over 17lb with the best at 4lb 4oz. Judith Tuffs was in excellent form fishing black and green lures on an intermediate line in Bog Bay. She had taken 7 fish by 9am and went on to release several more.
The best fish reported on Opening Day was a cracking overwintered fish of over 5lb taken by Nigel Woodhead who was fishing on Stilton Bank with a floating line and black and green lure.
Twelve boats ventured out and all reported lots of fish from all areas of the lake.
The Opening weekend has seen a rod average of 6.3. With a further stocking this week of 1,000 fish from Rainbow Valley, bringing the total stocked so far to 5,500, the rod average is sure to remain high.
