        Hello

Wondering if anyone can help? I’m spending a few days on a narrowboat in the Trowbridge, Bradford-on-avon, Bath area in the near future and want to do some fishing.

Does anyone know who controles the fishing and what the deal is with day tickets in the area? I’m quite happy to hand over a small amount of cash to a local club but wont be in a possition to nip off to a local tackle shop to buy a ticket. I’m thinking my best option may be to simply fish from the boat and offer to pay or stop fishing if confronted by a club bailiff, does this seem like a sensible approach?

Also it’s years since I’ve fished a canal so any advice would be great paticularly with regard to catching a carp or pike!

        Thanks in advance

First of all you will need a rod licence, or your fishing trip may become a £2,000.00 fine!
Pike are not my thing, but if your going to fish for Carp, I would find out first if they are in the stretches that you are going to navigate. (someone on here may know)
Take Corn, Pellets, Bread and some Boilies with you, then you do not have to worry about tackle shops.
I would also tackle up for them if they are there as carp in canals can get BIG.
Last one I had out the Staffs/Worcester was a baby at 18lb ! compared to some of its mates !.
Let us know if you catch anything.

Thanks for that and yes, I have a rod licence. Good job as for the first time in 25 years someone asked to see it last month!

There are loads of carp along the stretches that you are going to. One of the best areas is the Devizes run stretch below the Caen locks. You can’t miss them as there are 20 odd..
You can catch them under the over hanging trees that line the turning bays. Towards Bath there are stretches which are lined with rushes and these are carp areas.
The best time to catch them is after the boats have tied up. You want to try putting out some floating baits like dog buscuits and wait and see if anything takes them. It should be warm in the evenings and quiet without the boats. Look for turning bays and overhanging features like trees and big bushes. Try the method with pellet or corn.
The carp go up to about 30lb but there are lots of them around 10 – 20lb.

As for the pike they also inhabit the same areas as the carp as they need to keep out of the way of the boats. Most of the canal is about 13m wide so the bigger fish back off to the turning bays and marinas. You won’t see many people asking for a day ticket but just pay up or stop if necessary.
