Fish week 197 (Season 28,399) Returns 99 (7,933) Rod average 1.98 (3.57)
Rutland Water visitors Simon Guthrie and his son Elliot returned to Manton Bay following a very successful catch there in August. The pair excelled again netting a bag of 8 fish for 25lb with two exceptional fish –a 5lb 7oz Rainbow for Simon and a 4lb 3oz Brown for young Elliot. Specimen hunter Simon Ashton caught his best fish of the season with a cracking 6lb 7oz Brown, this was the last of the big Brown trout to be taken out of Rutland Water this year as our season for Browns ended on 29 October. Any caught from now on must be returned to the water alive. With the winter restrictions looming a number of both bank and boat anglers headed to the bottoms of the arms last week to try for something special, with some reaping rewards and others enjoying the scenery.
Fishing has not been easy. Fish have been seen to feed steadily on corixa, shrimp and fry around the lake with patterns mimicking those feeds producing best. Whilst boat fishing has had the slight edge over bank fishing, sport has been found to both methods. Boat anglers employing fish and move tactics with lures and tubes resembling fry are having some success. Finding actively feeding fish has been the key to success. Although not easy to employ, this strategy has also worked for bank anglers who have enjoyed good fishing along the Normanton bank and from the peninsula through the week.
Winter restrictions commenced on 1 November. No bank fishing from Barnsdale Road end around to the transformer of the North Arm and from Old Hall Point to the most western part of the Green Bank. Boats are now limited to the sailing restriction buoys at the bottom of both arms.
