REPORT
Championship Match 19 (the final match in the series), also for the Fletcher Cup and the Annual Christmas “Fur & Feather” event, was held on the Carp Lake at Rycroft Fishery (Hemington).
In spite of the very strong wind and forecast rain there was once again an excellent turnout with anglers around the whole of the lake.
Although interest during the day focussed on the early pegs and those in the early teens which were initially more sheltered from the weather, Dave Hilliard (peg 24) and facing straight into the wind and rain, crept in “under the radar” with 6 carp and some skimmer bream to put 36-04 on the scales and record a clear win. All his fish fell to method feeder baited with banded pellet fished at around 20m from the bank, taking odd fish throughout the day.
The battle for second place was between four anglers, and proved much closer than many thought with a tie for second place between Junior member Alex Brailsford (peg 13) and Steve Talbot (peg 2), each with 32-00. Alex, with three fish in the final hour, landed five carp bomb and bread, where as Steve’s fish mixture of carp and bream came more steadily and mainly fell to pole baited with pellet and worm.
Bill Peach (peg 7) ended with a 30-00 catch of carp taken on bomb and banded pellet for fourth place, Keith White (peg 15) with 5 carp and some “skimmers” taken on a small feeder baited with pellet for 29-02 taking fifth place.
Championship leader John Adamson secured the title with a sixth placed catch of 21-06 consisting of 5 carp and 4 skimmer bream, the bream and one carp on groundbait method and dead red maggot, two carp on pellet method and one on straight bomb and pellet, Rob Pembridge ending Championship runner up with 15-08 from peg 10 with a single carp and several skimmer bream.
The final top ten in the Championship Table (over 30 competitors) reads:
John Adamson 232 points: Rob Pembridge 223; Steve Talbot 220; Brian Leafe 209; Dave Cotterill 208; Andy Edwards 200; Paul Richardson 199; Dave Kent 196; Keith White 181; Mick Lager 179.
The Christmas Fur & Feather prizes will be available for collection on Wednesday 23 December from 7.30 pm at the Soldiers & Sailors (Sawley) Club with will be held as a joint event with the host Angling Club as many anglers fish with both clubs. A buffet will be served at this event for members and guests of both Angling Clubs.
