With yet another week of intense heat there have been fewer anglers out and about. However, some of those that have braved the conditions have found good sized overwintered fish, with fast sinking lines and lead core producing the better bags, with tube fly and ‘snakes’ proving to be the best method.

Surprisingly the majority of fish caught have been away from the aerators in the open water of the main basin, with several fish around the 3lb plus mark caught from the North Tower area.

Two bank anglers had some good sport last Friday fishing off the Normanton bank to Fantasy Island. They kept on the move with surface fry patterns.

The recent cooler weather conditions are very much appreciated; it might be worth venturing down the arms and looking over the plentiful weedbeds for signs of early fry/snail corixa feeders.

      Competition news

Five of the eight anglers fishing on Tuesday caught fish. Keith Jones won on the night with two fish weighing 5lb 0¼oz. Sean Hanlon was second with two fish for 4lb 12oz. Third place went to Hilary Tomlinson with one fish at an impressive 3lb 8¾oz. This lovely specimen won Hilary a free midweek boat on the night; it was also the best fish caught this week.
With only a few weeks of the league remaining Keith has re-affirmed his position at the top with 87 points, Rich Cooper added two points on the night giving him 77 points in total, so it’s not quite all over yet.

Although conditions have been tough, anglers are still managing a few fish, particularly from around the dam area and fishing out into deeper water. A mixture of styles have been successful including back drifting on Di5’s or 7’s coupled with a large snake or minky, with others still on the floating lines, catching on dries, hoppers, crunchers and diawl bach, particularly on the aerator. Bank anglers are having varying success with lures although many are having better luck fishing shrimp patterns. There are a number of fish still patrolling the margins so it’s always worth staying mobile and tracking them down throughout the day.

The weather over the coming week is looking much better for an enjoyable day’s fishing, with cooler temperatures and the recent rain likely to see a feeding response from the fish.

      Fish 188 (season 5,141) Returns 40 (1,198) Rod average 4.7(4.3)
The change in weather conditions has improved the fishing on Pitsford this week, giving a rod average for the week of 4.7.

Once again many of the fish caught have been around the 3lb mark, full tailed and bars of silver.
Tactics are still sunk lines and a variety of lures and snake patterns fished anywhere from the dam down the length of the main basin.
Bank sport is still slow with the best chance of a fish either first thing or the last hour of the evening.

Mr N Cheetham from Thrapston recorded one of the best returns of the week. He caught 14 fish, returning seven; with a rainbow of 4lb 2oz and a 3lb 5oz brown in his bag.

Simon Lehane and John Castledine continued their good form catching in excess of 16 fish, fishing Di7 lines with tubes. Gavin Layton and Seamus Halliday had an equally good day, also catching their 16 fish limit.
1,000 fish were stocked this week taking the stocking at Pitsford this season to over 20,000, with a further stocking on Monday.
