I doubt the term duck weed is the correct hoticultural name for the horrible green carpet that covers our canal from time to time but I would be grateful if anybody can let me know of a safe chemical that can be used to clear it.
We currently have to scoop it out with landing nets and besides being back breaking work its not that effective!!~think

One of our guys suggested we recruit the help of bad lads doing community service which seems a good idea to me if we can’t sourse an effective chemical. Any ides on how I would go about this?

ive had it in my pond if it the same as you have
looks like 4 leaf clover with stringy roots hanging down
Diquat is a chemical that will kill it
but i was told to remove it by hand as its bad for aquatic life???
i had to fish every single one out by hand and touch wood ive not seen any for a few months

            two shakes

Any kind of weed killer will have a detrimental effect on the aquatic life.As for using “bad lads” that’ll be a no no as well due to insurance problems because of the risk associated with being around water.I do remember the Oxford canal around Rugby being covered in the stuff for years, and now its all gone,so might be worth contacting BW.

If you have access to both banks you could try a floating boom which whilst manual will clear a whole lot more quicker than individually by hand. Other alternative if you don’t have access is to use two small boats and drag the boom slowly behind. Talk to your olocal Environment Agency Fisheries Officer as they will advise or even help supply the equipment.
