TF_proper tidal boyIts not the willows tipping the water that’s the problem , its the fibrous root structures under the water where the prob lies so any weak links will show drastically quick ,chub have a very good habit of shedding the hook to a snag very quickly in fact there experts at it .as to line strength and elastics on the pole solid would be better than hollow even barbed hooks ,if allowed IE carbon chub should suffice, a 6lb chub gunner be very ware you might have to start on 016 and see if you can get bites otherwise you’ll have to come down gradually PS maybe braid hook length if the canal is too wide for the pole then a stiffer rod to turn them away from the snags will be needed good luck~think ~think

TF_Fred Davisrather than solid I would opt for a double 10, this elastic seems to power up very quickly and will stop a train, having just a couple of feet of elastic is asking for a broken pole, unless its something like a garbo carp power pole or maybe a tricast, using braid is ok for cutting through rushes hit a tree root and you could be in risk of loosing a few sections of pole, winter isn’t the time to go for a swim to retrive sections attached to a root with braid. It’s like everything in fishing you need to see what you can get away with to do the job, I do a lot of chub fishing and have very rarely found line strength to be too much of a problem, however sometimes to get away with the heavier lines you have to get them into a feeding frenzy feeding regulaly is the key and sometimes upping the feed at key times can be the switch to get more bites and the chub to feed confidently, the first thing is getting the bites once you start hooking the lumps that is the easy part imo

TF_proper tidal boyfred happy to double up lacy in open water but next to snags you might as well use solid all the way, have used double up twenty many years ago in a club water next to very established lillies. The fish used to inspect bait on the way out then turn round and take the bait on the way back in THEN IT WAS HANG ON ,THE POLE WAS A DRENNAN TEAM ENGLAND CARP quality

TF_Fred DavisPTB the team england carp pole was indeed a beast and very very strong, however I don’t think modern poles are anywhere near as strong as the team england carp pole, in fact most modern match poles are designed for lightness and stiffness, it’s ok if you can ship the pole straight back but on a canal with limited room behind that may not be an option hitting the bite and maybe or should I say shipping sideways at speed and exerting side strain with anything like 11 metres with the elastic bottomed out is a recipe for breaking a modern pole, imo,a few years ago I wrote several articals about doing the ton with carp on canals, I had more problems when switching to solid elastic than I ever did with black hydro and that includes chub for some reason, with hydro it was more of a controled stretch, hitting fish with solid and applying more power seemed to drive more fish into snags getting them to bolt against the power of the elastic, what was noticeable with the solid elastic was the lack of control over hooked fish, now I know this is contrary to most of what is written, pundits saying solids give you more control but I have experimented quite extensively with power elastics on canals for both chub to 6lb and carp to big doubles and solid is my last option because of the problems I encountered using it. Still each to there own
