The Gloucester Canal is a great place to match fish but !! All those hairy leg types and some almost normal family types descend on the towpath on match days ??? Huge amounts of money has been spent surfacing the towpath inches away from the anglers . Yet there are trees that need pruning . No work to produce a small flat spot for your box . Worse no evidence at all of any new small fish from restocking or natural .? Anglers pay and cyclists do not ..??? How come they get so much respect ???

The law states that anglers have more rights than cyclists and they should slow down, maybe it it time clubs put up warning signs for cyclist to slow down as fisherman in vicinity.
if you google it you will find it, it is about time we stood up for our rights and start being pro-active. I tell the cyclist on my canal at chesterfield and tell them to google it to prove my point..

Cyclists are actually supposed to dismount and walk there bike around the angler not just slow down, they are also supposed to carry a cycle permit obtained from british waterways! As for restocking their has been a lot of hype in the papers that the canals are being restocked, they are not, they are draining and netting certain so called unfished pounds normally ones with cables running down them and then transferring those fish to other pounds that are normally club controlled, this policy has been going on for years especially on luton waters, there are no new fish stocks, eventually these fish spread out again over time, there was a bit in the paper about specimen fish found on the blenheim canal there has always been a high stocking policy carried out by Blenheim whose waters were well known for bumper bream bags to over 100lb they even stocked barbel in the canal for their members so nothing knew there either except that even this canal isn’t a patch on what it used to be. However the canal trust want our support (mainly our money) so that the canal can be for the benefit of all users especially bikes. whilst parking is getting worse for us anglers who want to fish canals and facilities are non existent for example there are less anglers fishing canals a fiver in a council car park a fiver to fish the canal which has very low fish stocks, no facilities as opposed to going to a commy paying a fee of £9, high fish stocks, free secure parking, toilet facilities, shop and café on site, british waterways need to work it out it ain’t rocket science.

Maybe the river and canal trust get a taxpayer subsidy to do these cycle paths ?

Would not surprise me Paul if government money for improving access for bikes is given especially as they want the bikes off of the road, the towpath has got to be fit for purpose for cyclists to cycle hazard free which is why a lot of money has been spent on upgrading the towpaths and access paths so cyclists can safely cycle on towpaths now covered in tarmac, a lot of work around the London area was done during the London Olympics on our local canals to improve them for cyclists and the money was specifically targeted for towpaths to be improved for that purpose what annoys me is that anglers who are charged to fish see no upgrade to their facilities, some canals charge commercial rates without commercial facilities. At least for the price of a day ticket at a commy you get secure parking better fishing etc. etc.

the thing that makes me smile is that when we anglers get asked our opinion on a on-line british waterways canal survey we are then sent an automated response that immediately asks for us to contribute more money to enable the canal trust to improve the canal for all users, may be they need more money for the upkeep of tarmacked canal routes.

I read a story about certain cyclist in London that had total disregard for anglers and there poles were he was riding through them if they were shipped back across the towpath ,unfortunately for him said anglers painted a scaffold pole black that threw him over handle bars ,you don’t want know rest!

Some years ago a big hairy gorilla type ran over a blokes pole on the staffs worcs canal and an equally big angler who I shall not name pushed him off his bike , hoofed him in the cut , then threw his bike on top of him ! Plod turned up some time later and let him off with a caution . Not to condone this behaviour of course but it does show the extent of the hostility that can occur ! Great scaffold pole story !!! 😀 😀 😀
