yesterday our european golfers along with our american friends played out one of the most dramatic days in the history of sport in wales. how many ordinary people you know tax payers licence fee payers actualy got to see this amazing event live on telly. very few??? same with test cricket how many sit down on a warm sunny day with the telly in the garden and watch a test match like us older people used to do before the murdock days. we pay as a nation a fee to the BBC lovies and we get sod all in return ~sick but we have to pay. when as a nation will we grow some testicles and demand that certain events are sacrosanct and should be enjoyed by everyone in this once great nation that has become a island of meme.s and have,s/ havenots. i know sky pumps loads of cash into sport but its a downward spiral. less and less people watch these sports because there no longer in the public eye and will eventualy loose there appeal with sky and be dumped into oblivion. football is an exception this was and never will be owned by the nation it was always a private thing where you payed to watch it. but the ryder cup/ ashes always was publicly owned and enjoyed by all. yesterday was a day when the nation with all this crap going on should have had an enormous lift instead only the privliged few got that. and that my friend is pure nonesence.

            golf enjoyed by all?

            come on herbie, golf!

over paid, over hyped and every sports program on telly has to refer to it.

it is boring it is silly and has no place on a fishing site.

a good walk ruined; losing a ball in a hole mutter, mutter. lol.

herbie, I fundamentally disagree. Live sports coverage has taken massive leaps forward in the UK over the last two decades and this is primarily because of Sky.* Also, I would not be happy if the BBC was using my licence fee to bid silly money to broadcast a minority sport on a Monday morning, when most people are at work anyway.

These days, almost everyone has access to Sky, either by subscribing, having friends/ family who subscribe, or a local pub where you can watch your favourite event for the price of a drink.

I think my licence fee represents great value for money. I log on to the BBC website every day without fail, I watch the BBC news coverage every morning and evening and I use iPlayer at the weekend to catch up on all of the programmes I miss during the week. Throw in some excellent coverage of major mass-participation sporting events (not the Ryder Cup or the Ashes – I am talking about World Cup, Olympics, etc here) and what you have got for just over £10 a month for an entire household is an aboslute bargain.

*I think one exception is probably Channel 4’s cricket coverage, notably of the 2005 Ashes, which was both groundbreaking and game-changing (literally if you think of Hawkeye and the DRS). It has probably not yet been surpassed.

I would have thought, least for yesterdays play, what channel it was on wouldn’t matter overly as surely most people, like me, were hard at work so the radio or net coverage had to surfice anyway?

Herbie, as Gary says. Almost everybody has access to Sky sporting events and other sports broadcasts these days.

You just have to know where to look for them. Justin TV, USTREAM, P2P4U and ILM TV are just a few of the places you need to look to solve your problem and put two fingers up to those who make
billions by restricting sport on TV from the masses.

What do you mean “restricting sport on TV from the masses”? There has never been a divine right to be able to watch live sport on a TV broadcast. Sky have actually brought far more sport in to the live broadcasting arena than the BBC ever would have. There is a cost to doing so and that cost is met through subscription charges. It’s a pretty reasonable business model in my opinion. I don’t really understand why people get so emotional about it.

As for streaming programmes over the internet; as far as I am concerned, that is criminal and merely pushes up the cost for the honest members of society who do pay their fair share. It’s a bit like benefit fraud or tax evasion, in that sense.

They only had to start bidding “silly money” after Sky started throwing money around, this in turn, was only made possible thanks to NI readers subsidising the venture.

I don’t know of any live sports that Sky have brought to the broadcasting arena that I actually want to watch. I know a few that they’ve taken out of it though.

Rob, it’s not often I disagree with you, but I do on this, for the reasons that I detailed above.

bremes, I don’t think of myself as an angel, but I am certainly not a ‘dodgy geezer’ buying bootlegged booze down the local on a Friday night. When politicians talk about “clamping down on tax evasion and avoidance,” people assume that this refers to high-rollers with loads of cash hidden in offshore accounts. I am afraid to say that it is far closer to home than that (particularly judging by some of the comments on this thread).

Herbie, you might want to look away now….

In 1996 there was a list of events protected for viewers of terrestial TV, if I remember correctly (can’t be bothered to check exact numbers now) it was around 60 events, Cup Final, all domestic tests, the Derby, Grand National, the Open, Wimbledon, RYDER CUP and so on.

In that year a Mr Blair flew to Australia for a meeting with a Mr Murdoch. Following that meeting a certain newspaper group switched it’s support from Conservative to Labour. Within 6 weeks of winning the 1997 election a certain political party quietly passed a bill that slashed the list of protected events by over a third resulting in a huge increase in subscriptions to a certain sattelite broadcaster whose operation was haemorrhaging money. Up the workers eh?

correct the public were ripped off to the advantage of no one.

gary my son your little speech reminded me of LET THEM EAT CAKE. people with a good income who can afford sky seem to think everyone else can also afford sky. you along with the rest of the middle classes in this country need a reality check. many of us are on minimum wage and can barely afford a licence let alone sky. my arguement is not with sky and i also do not want vast amounts of money wasted. but these events were the property of the working classes . yes my son we do exsist and dont all work in london. we are the little people who provide the services your lot take for granted. these crown jewels were pawned to that aussie prat who thinks he rules the world . my only crum of cumfort re murdock is he,s old and will be dead soon hope im still here to see it. the point i was making and a few were too slow to notice was that if we continue down the road of pay per view then some sports will fade and die like cricket in this country already is. back in 2005 after the ashes win one thing could not have escaped anyone,s notice. kids playing cricket on every street corner. move forward to 2009 and well nothing no kids with bats and balls in numbers because they could not watch it. oh and people who dont like golf can watch strictly come dancing instead or better still x factor with there god simon
