TF_budangler14Participantwhats the best way to approach a canal, fishing bloodworm & joker in winter when you can see the bottom, the water is that clear – the canal is a typical narrow boat canal – width approx 12 metres- depth approx four foot – should i try & create some cloud with what i feed or just feed my joker & hope for the best

LEBOSQUETGenerally the best place to fish is just slightly up the far slope, away from the deepest part where debris collects but still with good depth, always have 3 or 4 lines,10oclock and 2,a dump line long down the peg and 1 closer in but still in deep water.

TF_NW Cut AnglerThe next is the ever-popular Grafton AA length of the Chesterfield Canal with the John Shaws length producing sizeable chub to fly casters as well as the more traditional methods.

Below Lock keepers, over the road was always good for a few chub especially where the trees/bushes over hang. John Shaws stretch I think.http://www.maggotdrowning.com/forum/topic.asp?whichpage=1&TOPIC_ID=111922&

Horrific scenario, one of the reasons why i switched to commies a decade ago lol

TF_Dave Pelletoooo!! john shaws, nice bit o canal
my guess is you’re gonna stuggle for chub if it is clear & the tench will definately be out of the equation
you might still get the odd carp knocking about at the far end where the reeds are, but failing that you’re looking at roach
I’d fish a light bloodworm rig down the track & a caster line at the base of the far slope, just in case anything better does show
if you draw near the reeds or the peg with the tree (if you can get my half dozen Drennan Choppa’s from those branches I’d be most appreciative!!!) you can’t ignore them, and again I’d fish caster with a bit of hemp

TF_orexinaTwo things you can do,
1. Find some mole hill dirt and cup in the LOOSE soil. This will colour the water in your swim but not everyone elses. Put enough in to give you a reasonable area to fish.
Find some reed beds and dig up the really black decaying dirt under the reeds. Then do as above. If you have tench in the area they will love this approach.

TF_NW Cut AnglerI do not know the canal but I would be very wary of using much to create a cloud effect. On the inside I would spot feed several swims to pick up fish anywhere/everywhere. On canals I fish you can catch tight to nearside canal bank and even next to your keep net.
Seems like Caster across for better quality fish.

TF_GaryGLEBE1, I completely agree. This sounds like purgatory to me. I would rather sit at home with a beer and watch some footie on TV!

TF_Dave Pelletstrange that cos for the last 2 years fishing commercials I’ve been feeling less and less motivated in general
in fact a couple of months ago I nearly moth-balled all my gear as I had zero urge to go, the only thing that stopped me then was the knowledge that it would soon be river/grayling season!
and then it finally dawned on me that I just don’t like commercial carp fishing, how you fellas go & fish identical venues / pegs for identical fish is beyond me, it’d drive me insane

TF_GaryDave, given the specific question, I don’t think it would be fair to turn this thread into a broader commercials v canals debate.
Good luck with your gin clear canal and sitting in the freezing cold!

TF_GaryNo probs. I started to reply then realised it wasn’t fair to the original poster.
So, back to the canal…

TF_NW Cut AnglerI had some success with Archie Braddocks spices mixed in with the leam for Perch on canals.
