Fishing in France is a fantastic way to experience big fish angling and the whole country is literally stuffed with massive carp just waiting to be caught! Many of the fisheries in France are owned and run by UK anglers or families so you can be assured of some home comforts too! Our resident angling expert and regular visitor to France, Wayne Box takes a look at some of the best carp lakes in France to suit all abilities and requirements. The issue with compiling a list like this is that there are so many fantastic fisheries in France, I really don’t know where to begin! I have decided to start with the lake I visited in April this year and it was quite a good trip for me personally with fish over 60lb landed. I have kept the list short but included some good detail into each of the venues, if this doesn’t make you want to book a french carp fishing holiday then nothing will!
Lac Du Tard
Lac Du Tard is a stunning 14 acre lake with an island, set in the famous Champagne region of France – just ten minutes from the market town of Vitry le Francois, and an easy 4 hour drive (with a stop) from the ports of Calais and Dunkerque. The lake is fully enclosed and has lockable gates. There are 10 swims, some of which could easily be doubles for a maximum of 8 anglers. This gives anglers plenty of room, with some swims having the option of fishing the island and others having plenty of open water. There are various features to each swim, although the lake bed is fairly uniform and mainly gravel, this helps to ensure that the fish visit most areas, giving all swims a good chance. There are no Poisson Chat, Bream or Crayfish present. There are English style toilets and shower facilities at one end of the lake, with an additional flush toilet for the swims away from the main toilet and shower block. There are also facilities for charging of batteries for bait boats and phones etc. And of course adequate freezer and fridge space for bait and food with a food package available that is superb! Now the important part, I have seen fish up to 67lb caught with my own eyes but I believe that 2020 will see the first 70lb carp banked, there are roughly 10-15 different 60lb fish and stacks of 50’s and 40’s, the smallest fish I caught out of the nine I landed was 37lb and the average weight of fish was a staggering 48lb! Not easy fishing but if it’s a PB you want then get booked up!
