TF_Gary the gudgeonThe best British player I have ever seen….GEORGE BEST
The best European player I have ever seen…..ZINIDAN ZIDANE
The best World player I have ever seen…, DIEGO MARRODONA
These are world class players,it’s laughable that Rooney,Gerrard,Lampard etc. are mention in the same breath.

TF_PaddyWhen you say “seen” do you mean that? or do you mean within your life time? You also say within the top 5 and go on to state only 3, who are the other 2?
I also admire;
Ferenc Puskas.
Eusebio.
Michelle Platini. -

TF_carpmagicParticipantGive it a couple more years and Messi would have to make that list.
To be honest other than the media who does actually rate Rooney and co above the likes of Messi etc? Certainly noone i know thats for sure. -

TF_PaddyPeter Knowles was another “pin-up” footballer at the same stage and time as Besty and could of easily equalled his game, if he had not found Jehovah.

Also, no mention of Pele. Is he now little more than a cliche?

TF_PaddyMan of Kent, no mate Peter Knowles was the man – he was the brother of Cyrille.
Wolves 1963 to 1967ish (i think).He famously said;
“I shall continue playing football for the time being but I have lost my ambition. Though I still do my best on the field I need more time to learn about the Bible and may give up football.”
Think he works in Marks and Spencers now!

TF_Gary the gudgeonpaddy, these are players that I have seen play, other players such as Pele, Platini,Puskas and many more World Class players I have unfortunately not had the pleasure of seeing in the flesh. Maradonna for me was the best I have seen, not only did he carry Naples to champion Italy’s league but carried Argentina for many years,to do that at International level is a tremendous achievement.

TF_Gary the gudgeonHerbie, I have looked down the list you provided and I have seen most of the players you list, hand on heart the only the only two I would pay to watch Dennis Law and Ryan Giggs.
Players not on the list that I would pay to watch,Matt LeTisser,Frank Worthington,Peter Osgood and Charlie Cook, not forgetting the amazing Tommy Harmer. -

TF_NW Cut AnglerHerbie on his anti Best crusade AGAIN ~naughty
Gary if you asked most top pros they would say Best. An interesting player that many pros rate far higher than fans is Zico.
Herbie, Best even excited Fulham fans long after his best. Scored a wonder goal in the USA. As somebody once told Sir Matt, I think I have found you a genius.
-
22/12/2010 at 3:03 pm #126271
TF_NW Cut AnglerJust had a look on your list Herbie. Mackay is probably the greatest footballer on the list. Some are incredibly mediocre. Strewth Reid, Rush and Shearer. Even Nobby Stiles PLEASE.
As an old git and somebody who watched Utd I am amazed you never put forwards the man who could have / should have been the best British player / best in the world; DUNCAN EDWARDS

TF_caster robParticipantAlan Shearer and Peter Reid.
Must be a wind up.
Along with Best, players like Alan Hudson, Tony Currie and Duncan Mckenzie would put an extra few thousand neutrals on the gate, just to watch them play.
The only pemiership player that I reckon had this quality was Paolo DiCanio.

TF_herbieso many to choose from. but a drunk/wife beater/womoniser who after 68 won the same as my dog. dont make me laugh. nwca my grandmother would have lighted up craven cottage in the 70s. as for peter reid top class midfielder technically superior to most around him and shearer had he played for united would have won more medals for himself and united. as a striker he had no equals. di stefano????, d edwards??? just how old are you.~think affers the only united player chelski would have bought 5 years ago was scholes.~clap ~clap ~clap
i wonder if newcastle airport will be renamed paul gascoinge airport in 20 years time. he has all the qualifications.

Herbie why when judging players individually do you keep prattling on about what their TEAMS won. It is the height of stupidity and simply proves you know nothing about football.
Any true football fans knows enough about the sport and has watched enough old games before their time AND listened / read to experts to know just what a fantastic player Duncan Edwards or Di Stefano was. To highlight Rush beggars belief knowing how he bombed in Italy. You could have mentioned John Charles but there you have a fantastic player who won very little again. Why oh why do you even purport to know something about football when a blind man would be a better judge than you are.

TF_bremesParticipantThese players are all i have seen “live”….
Duncan Mckenzie, seen him way before he hit the big time in forest reseves, without doubt the most magical player.
Johan Cruyff
John Robertson
Pat Jennings/Shilts
Denis Law
George Best
Psycho(never seen a harder but FAIR tackler)
Stan Bowles
Liam Brady
Ian storey moore
bobby moore
The list is endless, best ground ive been to,Bernabeu(sp)real madrid(forest euro final)
Worst ground..Kilmarnock(anglo scottish cup)
worst ground to get away from….White hart lane
Ground sadly missed…..Charlton fc/the valley(used to love the forest away trips on a friday night)no gravy on pie n chips though, whats that all about?????~naughty ~naughty
Funniest sight at footy match….Gary Crosby at the city ground hiding behind andy dibble of man city, then headed the ball out of his hand as he was about to throw it out, pure quality.

TF_herbienwca . the reports about di stefano, john charles, d/edwards and any other player you or i never saw are just that reports. what the writer thought at that time. unless you saw them then your estimation of there skills are based on other peoples opinions.ian rush played in italy when 1-0 was the norm. the italians played 9-0-1 all the time.take a swatch at his liverpool record. all great players played in great teams . no exeptions. they achieved things over a period of ( if they were lucky) 15 years. they were not burned out by the age of 23 because of girls/booze. best played at united in a great team. when he was kicked out he played for a team of hasbeens and performed accordingly. but because the media loved him he has become a legend. in much the same way michael ( give me boys anytime) jackson has. all the little blibs wiped from history. but i was there in the stretford end being amazed by his skills one day and disapointed by his lack of input into the team the next. as he got older the good performances diminished to the point where i was glad he was injured. so dont tell me i know nothing about football based on my dissapointment of what should have been a truely great player just because it doesnt concur with your opinion. giggs is 5 times the player best ever was because he,s done it over 15 years and has in my opinion done it in a far superior league set up that g/b ever played in.
ps didnt jimmy greaves fail in italy also. what does that make him then

TF_NW Cut AnglerHerbie we are in an age when we are fortunate that we can judge players long before our time. We can also take note of the players who played with / against them.
We will never agree re Best but my view is held by 99% probably 100% of far btter judges than you and I. In terms of ability / pleasure to watch Best is up there with anybody.
If you judge Ivan Marks internationally as an angler using your criteria then he would be a failure. Bit silly is it not to judge people on Trophies when it comes to ability.

What a tip it was back then the Springfield Away End IIRC it was either Chelsea or Newcastle fans that created a mud slide down it one wet day and enjoyed childhood games. Less pleasant, the Away End was once upon time full of stones / pebbles with some away fans used.

Heerbs – I was refering to the Hand of Scholer, against Poland wasn’t it !!
Wigan Mud Bank at Springfield Road, that would be the Chelski boys, we drew 2-2 at the Bridge on an ice rink, the mid-week replay was canc cos of Snow so the game was eventually played on the same day of the next round (see the weather was just as bad than) in about 1985 I think, snow everywhere, I was in the Home end with other Chelski boys (I used to do that back then, try to take ends etc…) and the other lads at the away end started sliding down the bank and a huge snowball fight broke out, we won 5-0 and Kerry ‘193’ Dixon scored 4.

1985 reminds me of the faboulus everton team and norman whiteside who stopped them collecting the full set with a wonder goal. everton also imho had the best ever goalkeeper in nevil southall. i remember looking down from the stands at o/t and thinking how the hell do you score past that. whilst at the same time looking at sparky and thinking jesus those legs are thicker than tree trunks. for the record united won 2-0 chockie got both.
