I don’t know if its just me but everything I am interested in always seems to sell at a fraction under retail price, making it pointless.

I know what you mean. Ive been looking at few Shakey Rigid rod holdalls with a certain Large ebayer. They get sold at action but are relisted shortly after this a few days later as its in my watching list even though its ended and been sold.
How can they do this when its an auction?
It simply becomes their minimuim pricing before they sell it. If it doesnt reach it after the end they relist it!!!

Crap, If you ask me but there are a few bargains to be had occasionally.

I know a lot of sellers bid their items up.

I’ve been bidding on seat boxes recently and have seen 10 seat boxes exactly the same from the same seller. How many of even the biggest mail order/tackle centres carry 10 of one sort of box. They’ve all gone for a similar price and I’m convinced they’re bidding them up to stop them going too cheap, then relisting them. Fewer and fewer bargains to be had for sure!

Mmm getting your friends to bid your stuff up is called shill bidding and is deeply frowned upon by ebay,a mate of mine did it with his brother a few times and got an email off ebay saying if he did it again he would be banned.
buying your own stuff makes no sense because you finish up paying the final value fee.
i’ve found the best way is to think of whats the least you’ll take for something and then put that as your starting price, then think of what you’d like to get for your item and put that price as you buy it now.
bargains are still there to be had but if the seller knows what they’re doing i’e their items have good photos and good description plus finishing on a sat or sun you’ve got no chance.
however if someone has an auction finishing during the week late on or if there is a football match on tv or somesuch it’s game on!
one of the main things about ebay that i think is wrong is bid sniper, i think it goes against the spirit of auctions and if i had my way i’d see it banned.

Turned into a bit of a wasteland for both buyers and sellers, flogged a load of gear on there recently all sorts (mini lathe, bib and brace, DVD’s etc.) and whilst it all sold the fees were astronominal between ebay and paypal must have paid the 20% of the sale fees.

Very few bargains to be had as most of the stuff you’re looking at it now sold by professional retailers so you’re looking at the exact same stock at the exact same prices as they sell on their own online stores.

In fact in many cases it’s cheaper to buy direct from their online shops as postage is often cheaper.

Have had some cracking bargains off there years ago but everyone is too clue up now and there’s very rarely any real bargains to be had.

In the past few weeks a couple of Maver Invincible poles selling from a shop have sold for reasonably low prices. Personally I wouldn’t bother as almost everything I’ve had my eye on seems to end up selling at or sometimes over!!! shop prices which IMO is absolute madness,

There is one particular regular angling seller whose goods never go “cheap”,no matter what the price with 1min to go,they always jump right up,often with the same set of “winning” buyers.~naughty

To be fair I did source an item for my workshop recently that although not made anymore used to retail at £1,100. I got it in A1 condition for £100 and a bit of fuel to pick it up. However on most sought after items this shill bidding seems rife. The only way to use Ebay is to bid the maximum you are willing to pay (dont forget the postage) then walk away if you are outbid. ~think

Dont know about finding a bargain but anything you sell ebay take about 15% if you work it out.

I’m sure it never used to be that much???

Agree with DirkDiggler, if the buyer knows what they are doing its rare to get a bargain even at 99p starting bid.

For sellers: – start low to get watchers make sure you have a good description and photos and always finish it on a sat/sun between 6pm-9pm and you get good prices the majority of the time.

For buyers: – look for items ending in the week or at weird times with poor descriptions – you may initially be put off but contact the seller and ask for details. Search wider ie don’t look for Daiwa TDR 3012 look for Daiwa reel, bit more searching but thats when the bargains jump out – typo’s are also great, got a really cheap Diawa TRD 3021 as well if you follow my drift.

There are bargains to be had but they are not easy to find, the tigher your search = less time spent and less bargains, the wider your search = more time spent but more bargains.

As with everything the more you put in!!!

There are too many dealers snapping the bargins up and relisting them!

The other week there was a Sensas 754 and 210 margin on – only used once, the guy was looking for about £700 collection only. I phoned him to see where he was (london) a bit to far for me to get to him. We had a good chat and he seemed a really genuine bloke. A couple of days later a “754 and 210 margin – used once” went on for £1100 buy it now from a seller in the Midlands. Bought and relisted me thinks!

Thats business i suppose, just p’s me a bit!

The trick is to bid the maximum you are prepared to pay with just seconds to go to the end of the auction.
That way you are not tempted to get into a bidding war and the seller hasn’t got time to get his mate to bid it up.

That wouldn’t be ‘Reel Deal Tackle’ by any chance would it! They have a habit of being ‘unexpectedly out of stock’ of items that ‘sell’ for way under their true value and they then refund your payment. An auction is an auction and you take what it makes and that’s it!!
