REPORT
The third and penultimate round of the Grange Pond Winter League (organised by Richard Lyon and Paul Wheeldon) was held on Sunday in the most horrendous weather, when the anglers had to contend with very strong and gusting wind and practically continuous rain showers. The only plus factor was that it was slightly warmer that could be expected for the time of year.
In spite of the weather, every single competotor caught fish, and with the exceptio9n of the winning weight, the results were quite close.
Paul Hearson, who is having a good series so far, drew the peg that most of the competitors wished for, peg 11, which not only has some great recent form but was relatively sheltered from the wind on match day. Paul decided to limit his attack to straight lead without any feed, fished a very good match, and by alternating hook baits caught carp at intervals throughout the day with the exception of a 90 minute spell during the day when he was bite-less. His 63-12 total (see photograph of him with 40 lbs of his catch) put him well clear of the field for the overall win and maximum section points.
Martin Pacey on peg 23 also fished straight lead for two carp for a total of 16-00 to take second place and win the other section, closely followed by John Adamson (peg 10) in third with a two carp catch of 14-04, and Paul Wheeldon (peg 27) whose two feeder caught carp for fourth place weighed in at 12-00, Dave Cotterill (peg 13) taking fifth place with a single carp weighing 8-00, while Rob Pembridge’s sixth place weight of 4-08 was all silvers taken on the pole.
The fourth and final round will be held on Sunday 13 March.
