TF_wightanglerA good read and a brave Alex makes some contentious but well considered personal view of Big match individual fishing – and i’ll bet may upset some re-fisho?
Have to say, despite initial apprehension and my reader loyalty to Dave Harrell(one of my earliest angling heroes and a great editor), i think Alex has improved the mag with his own personal stamp.
He’s certainly not afraid with coming out with frank but considered views which i find refreshing – even if i personally sometimes have strongly disagreed in the past, lolHe makes clear its his own personal opinion based on his own season and fishing, but i’d certainly be interested as to how he thinks Fisho could be improved and further on why Cuddy should be further stocked – think that one might raise some hackles from regulars there!
Lots of good commie articles to mention- drennan cup and garbo club (well done Fred Davis on reaching the final and a good performance, a great Jonny Arthur piece on comparative hook weights, an innovative Joe Carrass paste method – which is really well thought out despite the way it looks, and a nice Dean Barlow interview. 😎Thought provoking – – so yes- deffo enjoyed- 🙂 and look fwd to the possible reaction to that editorial over weekend… 😉

TF_Man of KentI agree with the comments re:Alex’s improvements and think it’s moving in the right direction again after I criticised his earlier work, which seeemd to dumb it down a bit. Well done, Alex and thanks.
I was a little sorry to hear that Alex hasn’t been enjoying his fishing, and I wondered to myself that perhaps this wasn’t only due ot the Big Match focus, but also in editing MF, his involvement Guru/Dynamite/Shimano and the pressure with the England Feeder team, too. Hopefully he’ll get back to enjoying it again soon

TF_Waveney OneLots of anglers that I know who have become deeply involved with fisheries, clubs, fishery management or fish farms lose interest in fishing. Whilst it is probably every anglers ambition to give up the day job and become involved in fish and fishing full time, beware! You may regret it long term.

TF_scrubbaHello all.
Having read the editorial after the mag got delivered it struck a common thread with my own thoughts about fishing and in particular match fishing. Most commercial venues fish best with the least number of anglers on. As soon as every peg is put in the fish back off and become harder to catch, hence matches like Fish o mania qualifiers are very hard to win off the vast majority of pegs. Certainly not every peg is capable of 100lb or more. So as Alex mentions do you plug away or simply go home after an hour knowing you have no chance of winning. However as match anglers we tend to think that at some point you will draw a good peg eventually. From my own experiences fish’o mania qualifiers become a non starter, even if I drew a good peg it would be still be a bit unlikely that I could be in with a chance of winning. Is that down to ability, or knowledge of certain venues or pegs?
As a result of this commercial venues become less attractive because it is not easy to catch the weights you expect. How many times have you fished a commercial venue and bagged up, only to fish the match and struggle. Its the same on rivers and canals too I suppose. I enjoy fishing canals, but by the end of a winter league or similar I feel like never going back after the comments and treatment you get from the general public.
Maybe the point of the editorial is to enjoy whatever type of fishing you do and not get carried away expecting to catch big weights every time you turn up, and tone down the win at all costs attitude that exists at many commercial venues.Tight lines.

TF_Matchman_25After being a long and religious subscriber I can agree with the fact that Dave Harrell was a great figure for me and I felt his work with Match Fishing Magazine and DH Publications was purely excellent.
But…..
Alex Bones has came into the magazine offering fantastic new and innovative ideas concerning angling publications. After the modernisation of the Pole Fishing Magazine a few years back, its brother, Match Fishing, seemed to follow but, in my opinion, with the backing from Alex. For someone who is more from the side of cameras he has adapted very well and some of the articles are some of the best ever. Dave Harrell will always be a legend in publications and of course angling but Alex is a modern inspiration! Keep it up Alex. 🙂
