TF_Fred Davisthose styro foam wagglers are sh*te they mark up and bust up to easily and normally only last one bagging session, I make my own in the smaller sizes which are robust, spot on shotting wise, last for ever also win lots of coin, and are constantly asked for by my mates even though I detest making them and only do them under extreme pressure ie when i make a few for myself they all jump on the bandwagon or try to, however the new big pellet wagglers that preston and daiwa are bringing out are for the big chuck have interchangeable tips two sizes of base disc and are loaded.

TF_mp.miloI use Dave churchwood styro wags and they definately aint shite, had em for years , they might get a bit bruised and battered. But that doesnt affect shotting or flight, Ive got some Dave Brittain styros that are years old as well and won me mega money at Dryad and ive never had any fall apart.

TF_Fred DavisNo problem with that MP Milo you obviously like styro foam wagglers I can’t stand the stuff, Infact far better materials are now available like, rohocell, closed cell foam. just as light but a hell of a lot more sturdy, carry on using the styrofoam if you like it moi son
having siad that i do have some styrofoam wagglers in my box for backup just in case I lose one of my own
but again the post is not about the hand made,2 to 6 swan shot pellet wags that everyone one wants to sell you but the new, yet to be released, mega sized pellet wags with inter changeable tops (so you can change the tip colour) and disc’s (to create the popping noise and stop the loaded wag diving)

TF_wightanglerlike Fred, i’m also interested in the new pi ones for longer chucks -having seen presumably the same pi tackle-‘winning pegs’ dvd that features them.
– i’d also love some of the John Bonney ones but can’t find anywhere on web that sells them online or where to enquire? -

fisherman philParticipantAnybody intrested in John Bonney floats can P.M me and i can get them

19/07/2012 at 8:25 pm #160817
TF_Fred DavisNick I don’t make styro wags  , why on earth would I when I can buy yours :p or any other floatmakers, it’s just a personall thing I just don’t think there robust enough I would rather use balsa than styrofoam as the float is bigger and acts better as a bolt rig because it’s bigger it’s harder for a carp to pull it through the water, if I want to use a thinner lighter pellet wag then rohocell is a far superior material, however tell me a float maker that is making pellet wags out of rohocell? there ain’t one at the mo, and thats the way I like it. 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
so there we have it Tn floats, John Bonney, Dave Churchwood and Nick Gilbert all produce styrofoam pellet wags, not forgetting Wilko these floats are to die for if you like Styrofoam Pellet wags, Plug over :p
now cut the cr*p and lets talk about the new preston or diawa wags with inter changeable tips and the preston with two size of popper disc’s pre loaded floats lol 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
anyone seen them yet lol

TF_tractorboyFred,
I have seen the Daiwa pellet wags and yes they look great.
They haven’t been released yet and neither have the Preston ones, but they will be out soon.I think there is a good call for carrying a selection of pellet wags with you. I have used styro’s and caught lots of fish on them and they are great for short range and for just making a noise as they don’t tend to dive, although I like to use the lightest I can get to where I want to fish.
The John Bonneys are great for distance fishing or if its windy as they fly like a dream, and by feathring you can make them slap the surface lovely.
The Cralusso rocket pellet wag also flys like a dart and is great on windy days or for casting distance.
Go to Viaduct and you may need to fish a clear crystal pellet wag to get a bite.
Just carry a selection of all I say. 🙂
The new Daiwa pellet wags will be a big hit as will the new Preston ones. -

TF_JohnHI use the Drennan loaded crystal pellet wags, £1.70 each with weights to 5g. With 4lb line I can cast them as far as I can catty the pellets. One tip.glue the weight in as they work loose. I saw a video last week with Will using pelllet wags that were 15g! He must have very good cattys.
Also carry the Cralusso ones which cast wonderfully well, I only use the lighter ones. -

TF_Fred DavisJohn H, when using big wags at distance they don’t feed, relying on constant casting and recasting creates a splash and noise that will attract carp to the hookbait, always worth a cast with the big wag, more importantly the new browning force 11ft pellet wagler rods will cast floats up to 20grams.The rod is a slim blank with a parabolic action selling for £34.99 these look and feel as good if not better than a carbonactive 11ft on steroids, possibly the next cult rod imo they are that good, I was going to buy a couple of carbonactive pellet wag rods but these browning rods look the ticket for 11footers and a slightly bigger pellet wag.

TF_JohnHThanks Fred, it was filmed at GV I didnt think there were any big chuck pegs there but I have never been. Agree on the rods, the 11 footers I have are superb, Shakspeares mach 3. I usually try to fish PW at the range I can catty pellets.
Incidentatly I had a day with Giles for charity and his take on PW was that its all wrong. He favoured 14 foot rods, to pick up line quicker and standard wag floats like peacock quill or crystal wags. Certainly makes you think. I always carry longer rods but end up using the short ones. -
24/07/2012 at 8:59 am #160922
TF_Fred DavisGive my regards to Giles if you see him great feller although I gather he has given up fishing or is it just competitive fishing, I know Giles has a very different take on pellet wag fishing I wrote an article on pellet wag fishing for talk angling years ago recommending the drennan brown un’s floats which were a clear plastic loaded waggler no insert, but were pucker for fishing the pellet, a prelude to the bigger wags we use today mainly because instead of useing 4m and 6mm pellets we now in the main use 8’s, Giles concluded that this was all wrong much preferring the insert waggler, however both methods are extremely effective, I would argue that using a 14ft rod will cost you a lot of time in getting fish in close to net and does not lend itself to fishing efficient and fast, however Giles certainly does it his way and who can argue with his track record? superb angler superb gent, when I first fished the TF Glebe match I was on uglys but at the wrong end( as far away from the famous boards pegs as is possible), anyway I had just sneaked under a ton of carp which was a great weight from where I was and was struggling to lift the net, the only angler to step forward and lend a hand was Giles, top angler, top bloke.

TF_JohnHFred, you wont see Giles using 8mm pellets either!
He uses 6mm in summer and 4mm in winter, he says bigger pellets fill them up too quick.
As for 14 foot rods Giles, as ever, has evolved his own techniques for getting them in the landing net, he keeps his rod low to his right until the fish is directly in front of him about 5m out, in one sweep then his rod is switched to his left and the fish always pops its head up to basically see what is going on, whilst at the surface he has about 5 seconds to net it before it turns and bolts.
I have tried it and on smaller fish I am fine, bigger fish are more difficult.
I think Giles fishes local now in the Newport area only, top bloke and much missed on here IMO. -

TF_Fred DavisAll top anglers have there own little wrinkles Dickie Carr the youngest swinger in town was still setting the pace for fishing the pellet wag so much so he was banned from some waters for winning too much and diminishing the attendences, Dickies trick is to fire 6mm and 8mm’s in the same pouch the 6mm’s land shorter so you get two bites of the cherry miss a bite on the 8mm line no problemo float is now on the 6mm line, The problem with changing the angle of the rod is it can lead to occasional hook pulls, Will Raison likes the shorter rods, everyone is different and does it slightly differently, I think the bolt effect you get with bouyant wagglers takes away some of the need for delicate presentation a point which Giles has always advocated.Waters are also different, Take stafford moor 8mm is king if you fired 6mm’s in you’d not reach the distances required in a lot of pegs and also get plagued by skimmers lol

fisherman philParticipantGot the new daiwa pellet wagglers in Banbury Gunsmiths so brought one today just to try.Have put it in water and it sits just right right just need to see how it casts now.Have noticed that the weights are a little out as it states 10gm on the side but weighs 14gm.Weighed the 15gm in the shop and it goes 19gm and this could cause it to dive a little deeper but will wait and see

TF_Fred DavisFishermanPhil, It might mean that the float takes a 15gram brass loading not the actual weight of the float which will be more because of the extra material/balsa needed and weight of the plastic tip, what was the rrp on the floats

fisherman philParticipantFloats retail at £4.99 but this could vary in each shop….Come in three sizes…8 10 and 15 gramm….Think they will sell well

TF_JohnHFred, just got back from Whiteacres and most of the Preston guys were there for tuition. Tommy showed me the floats they had, and advised they should be in the shops this week.
The interchangeable tops are plastic sleeves which just push on, the floats also have a rubber disc which sits at the base to limit diving on the cast as the floats are loaded.
I pointed out that the only development left was for them to produce a clear plastic float to this design, Tommy hinted one was on the way.
We are very well blessed with some great gear, the Preston stuff, like many manufacturers of tackle just now, is spot on and not too pricey. -

TF_wightanglerJust received some John Bonney ones thanks to Phil on here.
Well impressed and looking fwd to using. -

TF_Fred DavisAbsolutely John we are now seeing some real quality gear from our tackle manufacturers at a standard that cannot be re produced elsewhere, I shall compare both the daiwa and preston new wags with there interchangeable tips and disc’s and the best will be my choice for distance wag work
the angling times link showing Steve ringer putting the daiwa wags through there paces is worth watching
