TF_Daz NewellThanks for your help and input on the previous posts and it seems your info has helped as ive had a first & a 2nd in consecutive matches…..
After initial(first) feed do you continue trickling the same feed throughout the match or after the first potting in would it be best to just feed the paste hook bait…. -

AnonymousThats an almost impossible question to answer as feeding changes from day to day, from swim to swim and from venue to venue.
The aim is always to put some fish in your peg to start with while they are hungary and easy to catch and then keep them feeding while you pick them off. Then, by adding more feed to your swim. Hopefully, you are drawing a few more fish in to your swim. However, too much feed and you can end up with too many fish in your swim. This results in loads of line bites and foul hooked fish. Foul hook a few and the rest of the carp can often back off and your then struggling for any bites for long periods of the match. Or, you get very frustraited at losing loads of foul hooked fish.
At the other end of the scale. If you dont feed enough and/or regular enough. The carp will eat everything in your swim. You might catch a few. Then the rest drift away from your swim. That leaves you to only catch the odd carp that might come in to your swim from time to time during the rest of your match. Its an ok way to fish on some venues. Its a very safe way to catch a few but unlikely to result in big weights of carp on most venues.
Your paste will hold a few carp in your swim if you have not caught for a while as your hook bait paste builds up in your swim. As soon as the new fish in your swim have eaten that built up paste feed. They are then likely to again drift off and your wating for bites again. This might be ok if your only looking for a few fish to win your matches. If your needing to catch lots of fish to build up a big weight. Then, your not going to keep the fish in your swim for very long periods of the match. (The exception to this rule is on venues that are solid with new fish where you might be able to pick out the bigger fish with paste). Can also work well not feeding on very hard venues or where there are some very big carp to be caught that your targeting thatnormally back off from feed!
However, to get the best from most venues and swims. You do need to feed more than an initial feed and then just the paste from your hook.
If you can find the correct amount of feed and how often to feed to keep a few fish in your swim and feeding. And, your getting real bites and not foul hooking too many. Then, your on to a winner.
The big problem is that feeding patterns change all the time. From day to day and from venue to venue. In fact, all the time during every match. This means that you have to adapt your feeding patterns to every time you go fishing and thoughout each match to get the best from each swim you fish.
A good basic plan would be to reward every carp you land with a little more feed. Think of your hook bait as the last piece of food to be eaten in your swim. So, you do need to add a little more feed to your swim to keep the other fish happy and to draw a few more fish in to your swim. Your not going to go fare wrong on most venues with that type of feeding pattern. However be careful not to over do the amount or how often you feed. The fun then starts in attempting to read and respond to each hooked fish, the quiet times when your struggling for bites and the number of line bites and other indications to determine how often and how much extra feed is needed to get the best from each peg you fish.
If your feeding every swim and venue in the same way every time you go fishing. Then, your not getting the best out of what you are doing. However, a 1st and 2nd suggests that you are doing something right on the vnues your fishing! So, well done!

TF_JohnHI fnd it best to feed by catty the same pellets you made your paste from, I use Skretins. This spreads it about a bit as foul hookers will be a problem if you overdo it.
Avoid cupping in altough sometimes this does work ok, in my experience foul hooking is much worse. I have also found feeding by hand similar lumps of paste to you hookbait but not right on top of your float, works well.
The size of fish you are after makes a huge difference, smaller carp are much easier to catch than large wise fish that have seem most things before.
TB is correct, no two days seem to be the same.
Final point about feeding, catty when your hookbait is not in the peg, this avoids fish in mid water fouling your line and giving false bites.
I feed after I have struck the bait off and drawn the rig in, quantity of pellets vary everytime depending on response. -
