TF_vicci5thinking of rigging a couple of my top 3s with a 4 and a 6 anyone tried them out i was thinking the 4 for skimmers and the 6 for larger baits like big punch for bigger skimmers and tench or chopped worm for perch on my local canal anyone tell me if they are up to the job….

Anonymousdouble 3 is perfect for skimmers and silvers i.e roach and rudd you hardly ever bump any, and in open water you can land carp on them in winter, I landed a 15lb carp a couple years ago on it although it took about half an hour to land, you will bump some fish on double 5 it’s a bit harsh for silvers in winter imo, others will tell you different but thats just imo

TF_budnuddParticipantBest lacky for commercial silvers IMHO is single no.5 but I am a big fan of doubled laccy and I have double 3,4,5 & 6. I also agree with the last post, double 5 is too harsh for winter silvers.

TF_jwbIMO for canal fishing I would not bother doubling up for skimmers, just fish a 3 or 4 latex.
doubling up the 4 or maybe a 5 might be good for chop fishing though. Soft enough not to bump skimmers but meaty enough for lump perch -

TF_redarmywhat you use would also depend on the depth, doubled 5,s would be to much in say 3-5ft of water but in 8-10ft is fine

TF_bully100ParticipantIt all depends how long your top kits are as it makes a big diference to how soft the rubber will be, the difference between a 3 or a 4 single is not alot but a double 3 or 4 is quite a bit more.

TF_allyParticipantI would just buy the normal elastic and double it up. As you are intending to use on a canal I would drop to doubled 2 and 4, you will find that enough. If in doubt just try a doubled 4 first.

two shakesI have doubled up Middy 3-4 and 4-6 in a couple of my top 3’s (number 1’s removed).I use the 3-4 for caster and 4-6 for fishing chop or half a lob.I’ve landed roach and skimmers from an ounce to over a pound on the double 3-4 and perch and tench from a few ounces to 2 pound on the double 4-6.Its not everybodies cup of tea,but it works for me.A word of warning though,in shorter lengths the benefits of it being softer on the strike are lessened, and it can be quite harsh.

TF_mike pattinsonBeen using d3 for two years now, find it works well, catching Gudgeon to 4lb bream, don’t set it tight or the advantage of it being doubled is lost.
I use d4 & d5 when catching fish over 5oz or has been said “fishing in deep water” with 0.8grm + floats.
