I’ve just got off the phone to a mate, he’s only just got to he’s peg and the river is coloured after rain 2 days ago. It could fish well. Good luck hot dogs!

Teriffic couple of days in the SW , a few sat nav problems but nevermind ! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜€

There was a real buzz again this year as big weights of bream were allways on the cards if you could draw on them ……. but where would those bream be ? thats the beauty and romance of our game i suppose ! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I drew ultra tough G section (no bream lol) and had a lovely days river fishing catching roach on the pole from a pacey narrow 8ft deep peg finishing 6 th in section. ๐Ÿ™‚

Well done Roger,my peg was similar only 8 foot deep and pacey, but it was a snag pit,i lost 6 hooklengths in the first 20 runs through,i put another section on and it was worse, 4 more hooklengths in 6 runs through ๐Ÿ˜ฎ i had to sack my pole line off and fish the feeder, for very little i might add ๐Ÿ™
Who else is left in the team that can draw well???lol.

I would just like to add,the pegging was a disgrace! i can only comment on my section which was` E`… some anglers had 50 yards plus to fish in and some didnt have 10 yards, like myself,it was a joke, its no wonder teams are dopping like flies.

If I am not mistaken (and I stand to be corrected here if wrong) is this not the first time a team has successfully defended their national title? Dorking won 2011 on the New Junction Canal.

From what info I have (which is not extensive my any means) teams have won it more than once but twice on the trot? Has this been done before??

Anway well done to team England (sorry, I meant Dorking) on their triumph.

Well! My mate drew E21! Had a sore neck after 22 and 23 were 1st and 2nd in the match, and 5 min before the end hooked a carp on the feeder but lost it at the net!! Still hot dogs finished 9th, they’ll be pleased with that.

Got a feeling that BAA won it in 1975 and 1976, having won it in 1972 as well. The match was bigger then, 80 teams of 12 at the time.

If my memory serves me correctly, Trev’s, with the Vincent twins, won divisions 5 to 2 in successive years and came 2nd in the first division on their year of promotion. I am pretty sure I am correct as Waveney AC started off at the same time as Trevs and gained promotion every year with them until we got stuck for 3 years in Div 2 before getting promoted to Div 1. We should have started a year later perhaps ๐Ÿ™‚ . I think we spent 4 years in Div 1 normally finishing in the top 20, until we refused to go back to the Leeds Liverpool canal again for the third time in about 10 years and the old NFA as they were then demoted us to the lowest league for not entering a team! That was the end of my National career and as there were a number of other teams in the same boat perhaps the beginning of the end of the Nationals as THE most important match of the season. Even the Winter Leagues became less important as the Nationals and the weeks practice away from home built up a great team spirit that was subsequently lost as was our winter league team eventually.

I think that in those day there were 50 odd teams in Div 5 with 90 or 100 teams of 12 anglers in the other divisions. At least I can say that I fished in all 5 divisions of the National, and gained a team medal for finishing 3rd in the 3rd Division when it was held on the Witham. No one will be able to do that again as the number of teams and divisions get smaller every year.

                                  Other back to back wins:

In the original, pre 1972, National when there was one match, Leeds won 1909 & 1910, Lincoln won 1935 & 1936, Leeds won 1948 & 1949.

My team Barclays Bank AA was another to get promoted year after year with 4th Div 4 in 87, 3rd Div 3 in 88 and 2nd Div 2 in 89, going head to head with what was really the Shakespeare team who fished then under the Glevum banner. Barclays had 3 years in Div 1; around that time the divisions were in seemingly endless expansion with divisions of 90, occasionally more, before it all started to contract. No medal for me as I fished the 87 and 90 matches but as I’d always wanted to fish the Div 1 match and be there on merit rather than making up the numbers it is the match that will always stick in my memory – that Witham National was one of the great Nationals with plenty of fish caught. With nowhere to go (with an inhouse works team we were never going to win Div 1!) the Barclays team fell apart and crashed out fairly quickly.

Hats off to the Angling Trust for just about pulling this National off , the logistics and terrain of the area and venue were not easy by a long way. Due to the Bristol Avon being where it is and also being a lovely part of the country lots of teams stayed over adding to the atmosphere of the event plus boosting the local economy i would imagine. The Angling Trust are listening to anglers , great credit to them …….. but please no relentless practicing leading upto the big day next year like what happened this year ! All said and done i had a fabulous couple of days in the SW even though i drew the toughest section lol , very helpfull / knowledgeable stewards with an all important sense of humour , fabulous event with a massive buzz…….. roll on next year !

Angling Trust report on the match…

Reigning Champions Team Daiwa Dorking retain the title in the 2012 Angling Trust Division One National Championship
This yearโ€™s Angling Trust Division One National Championship took place on the Bristol Avon between Chippenham and Keynsham on Saturday 18th August 2012. The river was about twelve inches above normal level and very coloured following some heavy rainfall.
The team event demonstrated the talent and strength of Team Daiwa Dorking who retained the title they won last year on the New Junction Canal. Without delving back into the history of the old NFA Nationals no one can remember this feat being achieved before. They had an outstanding score of 433 points out of a possible 510. Nine of the team finished in the top ten in their respective sections. The team are going from strength to strength following their successful win in the Angling Trust Winter League final held at Partridge Lakes last weekend.
Second place came from another fine team performance by Maver Image who scored 401 points and reputedly did not practice for this event. All their anglers finished in the top twenty in their sections. Third place went to the consistent Barnsley and District team with 387 points.
The top ten teams all won a place in the Preston Innovations World Club Classic weekend to be held on the last weekend of September on the Newark Dyke.
                                      1) Daiwa Dorking 433 points
                                      2) Maver Image 401 points

There were some excellent individual catches with many weights in excess of 5 kilograms. All the winning weights were made up of bream catches especially in Newbridge and Bathford sections of the river.
First individual was Steve Priddle fishing for SPRO Dorset Raiders. Steve drew peg E23 and after a quiet first hour caught 25 bream between 1.5 and 3 kilograms for a fantastic winning weight of 52.200 kg. He caught all his fish using a groundbait feeder in nine metres of water using worm as a hookbait.
Runner up on the day was Alan Brown fishing for Mosella Lostock Tackle. He was drawn next peg to the winner and used similar tactics for a weight of 35.680 kg. Third place went to Paul Cannon fishing for Hull works Sports Association on peg C2 with another bream weight of 30.550kg.

I do agree with you about practising Dodge as it favours the so called ‘full time’ anglers who can get time off when they want.
But they don’t allow it for seven days before the event do they? I thought that used to be the rule, or something similar… maybe I’ve got that wrong tho….

They allowed practicing the full week upto the National this year geeps even the friday before the big match ! If this isnt changed back to how it was and the venue gets a full weeks rest next years catch returns on the Trent and Mersey although a good venue will be a disaster !

I asked the Angling Trust for an on the record statement about practice rules for this year’s Division One. They kindly responded straight away – their response is below:

The ruling was changed and team captains/Club Secretaries were told of the change in rule this year to say that waters will be closed from 5pm the day prior. The Competitions Committee had to take into consideration the cost of travelling nowadays and some teams were having problems affording this and also staying away for two weeks proposed to say one week. The old NFA rule used to say closed from midnight the Sunday prior to the Championships.

It was to give teams that were fishing the winter league final the chance to practice for both events.

both national venues seemed ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ to fish ok even though they weren,t closed the week before.

My own experience of 15 world championships is that on strongly flowing rivers and waters holding carp, the more practice (the more food goes in) the better.
But on stillwaters and canals where there are skimmers and bream, it’s detrimental as they can’t handle the pressure.

Is it really 15 years since you first fished for the USA geeps?
