You are absolutely right. Scumbags – anyway you SHOULD be able to leave your gear in a van with no fear of it being taken.

I remember pike fishing in Ireland in the 60’s and being told to leave the gear in the boat in the centre of Lanesboro’ whilst we had a lunchtime pint or two.

At home in the 50’s the doors were never locked. Everyone struggled to make ends meet and it is true that we had less to be stolen but people have no respect for others these days.

Sorry to hear that. Trouble is you may have a problem with your insurance claim having left the gear in your van unattended. You may find that they will reject your claim or reduce the payout on the grounds of your negligence and virtually inviting trouble by leaving the gear in your van despite it being locked.

Dave, tough love is all well and good but I’m sure Knocker is already feeling the pain and kicking himself.

I know of others who seem to pack their gear the night before and are still optimistic that it will be there in the morning. Personally I’d rather get up 30mins earlier and pack in the morning than have the unpleasent greeting as Knocker has experienced.

Fortunately we don’t live in the 50’s or 60’s anymore and have to suffer Teddy Boys, Greasers and girls with tight knees!

Yes it would be nice to have the Heartbeat take on life but reality is that we do have scumbags and they probably live down your street without you realising it.

yes of course i screwed up and will never do it again as you say you live and learn.Another thing which i will get onto my van insurers is i can claim £100 personal goods but there is a £300 excess read the small print lads.

My sympathy m8 i had my pole holdall nicked from my van outside the Axe and Compass at makins a couple of years back.As it is visible the insurance were unwilling to pay out,the nice lady at the insurance company said if it had been in the glove compartment it wouldnt have been a problem.????? i wont say anymore.
                    Revenge was sweet.

Check your House Insurance, you might be better covered claiming from them, there is often about £2000 covered for loss of personal belongings even from a car. However, it does depend on the policy.

Knocker I can only sympathise and hope you have some luck with the insurance.

Your insurance will be ok if the gear was not visible, if the van has rear glass windows then a sheet covering the gear is ok.

having recently splashed out on a z9 i decided to check the small print on my contents house insurance that covers my gear. after contacting the insurance it appears that i am covered for up to 5k whilst in use. Does travelling in the van or car mean in use No a clause in the small print says only up to 1k if in a vehicle.I then asked if i left the gear in the van and got nobbled i would get only 1k but if i parked up for a breakfast, took all my stuff out left it at the side of the van i would be able to claim the full amount. i put this to the insurer and they said they are petrified of vehicle theft and this is where the line is drawn.crazy,,

From what ive found out today i can hopefully claim £1000 from my house contents but claiming £100 from van insurers with a £300 excess figure that out.

You can get your gear covered on household insurance (including theft from vehicle) but it usually all has to be ‘named’ items to a specified value (and they usually cap total at about 5 grand). Worth doing but check the small print as you’ll be shocked how much your stuff is worth.

As someone recently pointed out, I’ve got close to 600 quids worth of floats in 2 drawers of my box.~shh ~shh

Possibly got something sorted out on home insurance but i would urge everybody to sit down and price up everything they have and get correct insurance, its frightening when you add it all up.Hope it never happens to you lads even Dave Smith. Its a nightmare.

Its always worth keeping receipts and even taking photos of your gear should you ever need to make a claim as that way you will have some evidence of what you are claiming for – dealing with insurance companies is a nightmare at the best of times and will do anything in order to avoid parting with their cash.

You shouldnt have left it in your van ! How many people will be leaving their gear in their cars/vans next week down at Whiteacres ?We have all left gear in the car and left it unattended at some point even if its calling for an after match pint or stopping for some cigs. When they catch these little scagheads that steal things they dont want to put a tag on their legs and tell them their curfewed they want to put their fingers in the electric toaster !

a few years ago i had a genuine 2.5k claim on my house ins when my garage got broken into. Direct Line paid out without any quibbles. Only prob was that the renewal price next year went through the roof and they insisted that I had expensive locks etc fitted or I wouldnt be covered. I paid it one year but have now taken my poles off as named items. will take the chance.
Wish they paid out in cash though – the relpacement stuff was from Bennets and at full price nice business for them.
